Ann Walton Kroenke is an American businesswoman and heiress to the Walmart fortune. She is known for her ownership interests in professional sports, including the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League (NHL). Her father, James “Bud” Walton, was the younger brother of Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart, and one of his early business partners. Ann is married to Stan Kroenke, a prominent businessman and entrepreneur who owns major stakes in several professional sports organizations, including the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League (NFL), Arsenal Football Club of the English Premier League, the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer (MLS), and the Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). Ann’s family wealth is closely connected to Walmart, which her uncle, Sam Walton, founded in 1962. The company was incorporated in 1969 and subsequently expanded into a global retail giant. Today, Walmart is one of the world’s largest retailers and ranks among the leading companies worldwide by revenue, with operations across multiple continents. Ann Walton Kroenke and her younger sister, Nancy, inherited their shares in Walmart through their father, Bud Walton, making them beneficiaries of the family’s substantial business legacy.

Accumulation of Wealth

In 1962, Ann Walton Kroenke’s father, James “Bud” Walton, and her uncle, Sam Walton, established the first Walmart store in Arkansas. The business was formally incorporated in 1969 and later expanded its operations to include Sam’s Club, a chain of membership-based warehouse stores. Walmart was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1972. Over the following decades, it grew into one of the most profitable retail businesses in the United States. By October 2018, the company operated 11,277 stores and clubs across 27 countries under 55 different brand names.

During the early stages of Stan Kroenke’s career, Ann’s wealth provided financial support as he established himself in business. He entered the real estate industry and founded the Kroenke Group, a property development company, in 1983. The company subsequently developed numerous shopping centers and commercial properties near Walmart locations. Stan also serves as chairman of THF Realty, an independent real estate development company specializing primarily in urban projects.

In addition to real estate, Stan built a substantial presence in professional sports and entertainment. He founded Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, a company headquartered in Denver, Colorado, that owns and manages various sports teams and entertainment properties.

Stan acquired ownership interests in the Denver Nuggets of the NBA and the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL in 2000. He had previously become a part-owner of the St. Louis Rams in 1999 and purchased the remaining ownership interest from the estate of the team’s former owner, Georgia Frontiere, in 2010.

Due to NFL ownership regulations restricting majority ownership of other professional sports teams in NFL markets, Stan considered transferring the Nuggets and Avalanche to his son, Josh Kroenke. Ultimately, Ann took over ownership of both teams from her husband on October 7, 2015.

According to estimates published in November 2018, Ann Walton Kroenke’s personal net worth was approximately $6.8 billion, while Stan Kroenke’s wealth was estimated at around $8.5 billion.
