Birth & Education

Morgan Deann Ortagus was born on July 10, 1982, in Auburndale, Florida, and spent her childhood in Polk County. Her father, Ronald E. Ortagus, owns two Florida franchise locations of ServiceMaster, a company specializing in cleaning and restoration services. Her mother, Denise C. Ortagus, worked as an office manager.

Morgan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from Florida Southern College in 2005. She later pursued higher education at Johns Hopkins University, where she obtained two master’s degrees—an MBA and a Master of Arts in Government. She completed both qualifications in May 2013.

After finishing high school, Morgan entered several beauty pageants to earn scholarships for college. She competed in events such as Miss Orange Blossom, Miss Florida Citrus, Miss Auburndale, and Miss Teen Auburndale. She also participated in the Miss Florida Beauty pageant, through which she received a $3,000 scholarship. During her college years, she worked as a waitress to support herself.

When Morgan was 13, her pageant mentor, Malina Price-Bos of Auburndale, died after being struck by a drunk driver. The tragic incident deeply affected Morgan and encouraged her to become involved in volunteer work with organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

Career of Morgan Ortagus

Morgan began her political career by working on Adam Putnam’s 2004 congressional reelection campaign in Florida. She subsequently became involved with the Bush–Cheney campaign in the district.

In 2006, Morgan worked as press secretary for KT McFarland, a former U.S. government official and political commentator who was running for the Senate. She later joined the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as a public affairs officer. In 2007, she spent several months working in Baghdad, Iraq, where she collaborated over the years with Samantha Vinograd. The two eventually co-founded GO (Global Opportunity) Advisors, drawing on their professional experience with the White House and the U.S. Treasury Department. Their goal was to develop a new approach to helping senior executives and decision-makers expand their businesses internationally.

Between 2008 and 2010, Morgan served as an intelligence analyst in the Office of Intelligence and Analysis at the U.S. Treasury Department. Her responsibilities included publicly identifying individuals designated as terrorists under the United Nations 1267 sanctions list. In 2010, she was posted to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as the Deputy U.S. Treasury Attaché to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In this position, she worked with Saudi officials to prevent illegal financial transactions involving the country and served as an important connection between the U.S. Treasury Department and Saudi Arabia’s banking industry.

Morgan later worked at Standard Chartered Bank as a global relationship manager. She was part of the public-sector team responsible for clients across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. She also serves as an officer in the United States Navy Reserve.

In early 2016, Morgan joined Ernst & Young (EY), one of the world’s four largest professional services firms, as a global executive director. She subsequently established the company’s Geostrategic Business Group, an initiative designed to help organizations understand geopolitical developments and manage the challenges they create. She has served as an external director and senior advisor to the group.

Morgan has also appeared on several Fox News and Fox Business programs as a guest host and commentator. Her television appearances have included Outnumbered, Fox & Friends First, Bulls & Bears, The Greg Gutfeld Show, Fox News Specialists, Fox & Friends, Cashin’ In, Making Money with Charles Payne, Mornings with Maria Bartiromo, Cavuto on Business, and Lou Dobbs Tonight. She has also worked as a political and financial contributor for Fox News.

In addition, Morgan serves as a co-chair of Maverick PAC, an organization that seeks to encourage and support emerging leaders in American business and politics.

Her professional and leadership activities extend to several policy and nonprofit organizations. She is a leadership fellow at Johns Hopkins University and has been associated with the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), including its Future of Sanctions Task Force. She has also served on the Advancement Committee of the Institute for the Study of War and the Women’s Democracy Network Advisory Council of the International Republican Institute (IRI).

Morgan has held board positions with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation and Friends of the American University of Afghanistan. She has also worked with Concordia, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting partnerships that create positive social change. As an advisor to Concordia, she contributes to the development of its diplomacy and national security programs and helps shape its strategic priorities.

Family & Personal Life

Morgan has been married twice. Her first husband was Joshua Dobbs, an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. The two met in Polk County, Florida, and began a relationship soon afterward. Details about their wedding have not been widely reported. They did not have children and eventually divorced.

Morgan later married Jonathan Ross Weinberger, who has been associated with innovation leadership at the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. Their wedding took place in May 2013. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg officiated a ceremony in her chambers at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. Later that evening, the couple held a Jewish wedding ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel, officiated by Rabbi Kenneth B. Block. Jonathan affectionately calls Morgan “Bella.”

Trivia

During her college years, Morgan once believed she might pursue a career as a professional opera singer. She remains interested in the performing arts and is a patron of the Metropolitan Opera and the Kennedy Center. She has also begun taking vocal lessons in recent years.
