Heather O’Rourke was an American child actress who rose to fame after being discovered by filmmaker Steven Spielberg and cast as Carol Anne Freeling in the supernatural horror film Poltergeist. She became widely recognized for delivering the memorable line, “They’re here!” O’Rourke later reprised her role in the film’s second and third installments, further establishing her place in horror cinema. Career of Heather O Rourke

Heather O’Rourke was discovered by renowned film producer Steven Spielberg while she was having lunch with her mother at the MGM studio commissary. Her older sister, Tammy, was working on a film at the time. Impressed by Heather, Spielberg offered her the role of Carol Anne Freeling in the upcoming supernatural horror film Poltergeist. Released in 1982, the movie became a major success and quickly established O’Rourke as a popular child actress.

During the same year, she secured a recurring role as Heather Pfister in the television sitcom Happy Days. She also appeared in the television film Massarati and the Brain. In 1983, O’Rourke continued expanding her television career with guest appearances in popular series such as CHiPs, Matt Houston, and Webster.

In 1984, she appeared in the television programme Finder of Lost Loves, taking on a minor role. Her parents divorced in 1981. In 1984, her mother married Jim Peele, who worked part-time as a truck driver. Heather attended Big Bear Elementary School in California, where she continued her education alongside her acting commitments.

Despite achieving considerable success at a young age, O’Rourke maintained ambitions beyond acting. She reportedly planned to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), with the intention of studying filmmaking.

Illness & Death of Heather O Rourke

In 1987, O’Rourke experienced health problems, including giardiasis, and was subsequently diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. However, the underlying intestinal condition that ultimately caused her death was not correctly identified in time.

On January 31, 1988, she began experiencing severe vomiting. Her condition deteriorated the following day, and she collapsed while being taken to the hospital. She suffered cardiac arrest during the emergency transfer.

Medical professionals performed surgery to address an acute bowel obstruction caused by congenital intestinal stenosis, a narrowing of the intestine present from birth. Despite the medical intervention, she could not be saved and died on February 1, 1988, at just 12 years of age.

According to accounts of her final moments, her last words were reportedly “I love you,” spoken to her mother. O’Rourke was laid to rest at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Her premature death shocked the entertainment industry and saddened fans who had followed her career.
