John Green is a producer, editor, writer, and YouTuber from America. The novels “Looking for Alaska,” “An Abundance of Katherines,” “Paper Towns,” and “The Fault in Our Stars” are among his best-selling works in the New York Times. More than 24 million copies of his novels have been printed after they were translated and released in more than 55 languages. Green, a multiple award-winning author, is a critical critic of his works. Critics have acknowledged that he changed the course of young adult fiction. There are even others who claim he started a new, golden age of realistic teen literature. His young adult novels were described as “GreenLit” by “The New York Times.” On July 14, 2015, the mayor of Indianapolis announced it to be “John Green Day”; on July 17, the mayor of Orange County also declared it to be such. In addition to his best-selling novels, he is well-known for his YouTube endeavors. Instead of texting each other, Green and his brother started talking through videos, which led to the creation of the “VlogBrothers” YouTube channel. Subsequently, they started the instructional YouTube channel “Crash Course for Kids,” and both channels have a sizable following and viewership. With over 5 million followers on Twitter, he is also a frequent user of the platform.

Early Life & Childhood of John Green

On August 24, 1977, John Michael Green was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to parents Mike and Sydney Green. His family first relocated to Birmingham, Alabama, then to Orlando, Florida, shortly after he was born. The man is William Henry Hank Green II, his younger brother.

He went to Indian Springs School in Alabama and Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando. Green earned a double major in religious studies and English from Kenyon College in 2000.
Following his graduation, he spent several months serving as a student chaplain at Columbus, Ohio’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Despite his enrollment, he never attended the University of Chicago Divinity School.

His experiences working in a hospital and seeing children with life-threatening illnesses changed his career goal from becoming a priest to becoming an author. He eventually authored the book “The Fault in Our Stars” based on these events.

The career of John Green

John Green started as a production editor and publishing assistant for the Chicago book review publication Booklist. In addition to writing book reviews, he produced audio pieces for NPR’s All Things Considered and the public radio station in Chicago. He began writing the book “Looking for Alaska” at this time.

He published his debut book, “Looking for Alaska,” with Dutton Children’s Books in 2005. It was about adolescent romance, motivated by his experiences at Indian Springs High School. The film rights were bought by Paramount in 2005, however, no film was produced even after that period. Over time, the book’s sales increased, and in 2012, it made it to the children’s paperback section of The New York Times Best Seller list.

In 2006, he published “A Abundance of Katherines,” his second book. It was a runner-up for the Printz Award and a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. In this young adult book, the main character Colin analyzes his romantic relationships using several intricate equations.

Along with his brother Hank Green, he launched the YouTube channel VlogBrothers in 2007. Over the years, they have started at least 11 online series, the most well-known of which is Crash Course, which teaches high school students, as well as events and projects like VidCon and Project for Awesome. The VlogBrothers channel had over 3 million members and over 700 million views as of July 2017.

After starting VlogBrothers, the brothers attracted a large following that eventually evolved into a group known as Nerdfighters. The group takes part in several humanitarian endeavors, such as the yearly charity benefit Project for Awesome.

In addition, the Green brothers are the creators of several side projects, such as the YouTube game show “Truth or Fail” and the annual online video community conference VidCon.

The brothers launched the Project for Awesome, wherein YouTubers dedicate two days in December to producing videos endorsing non-governmental organizations or charities. The entire amount of money raised in 2015 was $1,546,384.

He co-wrote the book “Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances” in 2008. The book peaked at No. 10 on The New York Times Best Seller list in November 2009.

His third book, “Paper Towns,” which was published in 2008, debuted at number five on the children’s book bestseller list of The New York Times in 2009. The book was also adapted into a movie in 2015 under the same name. Green served as the film’s executive producer. Despite the favorable reviews his novels have all received, “Paper Towns” was condemned by his admirers, and Green was forced to issue an apology for the use of the word “retarded” in the book.

The book “Will Grayson, Will Grayson,” co-written by Green and his friend David Levithan, was released by Dutton Juvenile in 2010. After making it to the New York Times children’s best-seller list, the book spent three weeks there. It is the first young adult book with an LGBT subject to appear on that list.
His sixth book, “The Fault in Our Stars,” was published in 2012 and reached the top of the children’s book section of the New York Times Best Seller list. His experiences in a hospital, where he saw the suffering of kids with serious illnesses, served as inspiration for the novel. The narrative centers on a sixteen-year-old girl battling cancer. In 2014, a movie based on it was released.

After receiving funding from Google in 2012, the Green brothers’ Crash Course channel underwent a makeover and became Crash Course Kids. It covered a wide range of topics, including mythology, physics, literature, and film history. It received 11 million views and 158k subscribers as of July 2017.
The Green brothers launched “Dear Hank & John,” a weekly YouTube podcast, in 2015. It features entertaining portions like reading poems aloud and responding to viewer inquiries. A news segment comes to a close.

Turtles Down, his fifth solo book, is slated for release in October 2017.
