Richard Kevin Sherman is an American football player who now competes for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers as a cornerback. He previously participated in the “Seahawk” team that won “Super Bowl XLVIII” while playing for the “Seattle Seahawks.” He was a football player for his high school team and received an athletic scholarship to attend “Stanford University” after being born and reared in Compton, California. He played for the Stanford Cardinals for four years before being selected in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. He played with the “Seahawks” for 7 seasons, during which he was chosen for the “First team All-Pro” three times and the “All-Pro” four times; he was also selected for the “Pro-Bowl” four times. In 2013, he led the NFL in interceptions. In the League, Sherman has recorded the most interceptions and pass deflections. He was a member of the “Legion of Boom,” the Seattle Seahawks’ defense group that contributed to the team’s victory in “Super Bowl XLVIII.” Ashley Moss and Sherman are parents of two kids together.

Early Childhood & Life

Kevin and Beverly Sherman gave birth to Sherman on March 30, 1988, in Compton, California. He shares his family with younger sister Krystina and older brother Branton as the second of their three children. His father was employed by the city’s sanitary division.

At “Dominguez High School,” where he attended classes, he participated in football as a wide receiver, cornerback, and punt/kick returner. In addition to football, he took part in other sports.

He assisted his school in capturing the ‘CIF Southern Section Division III’ championship during his senior year. He was a triple jump champion for California State in sports and a USA Today All-American. At his graduation in 2006, he was selected as the class’s “Salutatorian” and “Male Student Most Likely to Succeed.” With a 4.2 GPA, he joined Stanford University and became the first student to be admitted on the basis of both academic and athletic merits in 20 years.

He participated in college sports for the “Stanford Cardinals” from 2006 to 2010. He was a wide receiver for his first three seasons and was recognized as a “Freshman All-American.” He was only able to play in 4 games for his junior year due to a knee injury, so he was given a medical redshirt.

Later, he made the switch to defense and started out as a cornerback. The ‘Stanford Cardinal Team’ set a school record in 2010 by going 12-1 during the NCAA Division I FBS Football season.
In 2010, Sherman graduated with a communication undergraduate degree from “Stanford University.” He belongs to the fraternity Phi Beta Sigma. He enrolled in a master’s program in his last year of eligibility.

The Career of Richard Sherman

In January 2011, he participated in the “2011 Senior Bowl,” and he then went to the “NFL Scouting Combine.” According to “Sporting News,” Sherman was the fourth-best cornerback in the 2011 NFL Draft. The “Seattle Seahawks” took him in the fifth round of the draft, 154th overall. He agreed to a four-year, $2.22 million contract in July 2011 with a $182,424 signing bonus.

He made a total of 55 combined tackles (47 solo) during his debut season with the “Seattle Seahawks,” along with 14 pass deflections, 4 interceptions, and a forced fumble. He was named to the 2011 PFW All-Rookie team as a result of his performance, and he led the team with 17 pass deflections and 4 interceptions. He was ranked 16th among all cornerbacks who met the criteria in 2011.

In the 2012 season, Sherman and teammate Brandon Browner were subject to a four-game suspension for reportedly using the combo drug “Adderall” (also known as a CNS stimulant), which was prohibited by the League. He prevailed in the League’s 4-game suspension appeal on December 27, 2012. A total of 64 combined tackles (58 solo), 24 pass deflections (a career best), 8 interceptions, and a touchdown were recorded while he was active in all 16 of the season’s contests.

The “Seattle Seahawks” qualified for the playoffs in 2013, and in January of that year, Sherman played in his first playoff game ever. However, the team lost in the divisional round.

He was chosen for the 2014 Pro Bowl in December 2013, which was his first Pro-Bowl. He was once again chosen for the ‘Associated Press NFL All-Pro First Team’.

‘The Seattle Seahawks’ Legion of Boom defense, of which Sherman was a key member, was rated as the best defense in 2013. On January 19, 2014, he significantly contributed to his team’s triumph over the “San Francisco 49ers” in the “NFC Championship Game.” Sherman was fined $7875 for “unsportsmanlike conduct” after the game due to his mocking gesture toward a member of the other squad. In 2013, he led the NFL in interceptions.

On February 2, 2014, the ‘Seattle Seahawks’ won the ‘Super Bowl XLVIII’ by defeating the ‘Denver Broncos’ 43-8. Sherman deflected a pass in addition to making 3 tackles overall.
He agreed to a 4-year, $56 million contract deal with the “Seattle Seahawks” in May 2014. He rose to the position of highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

On November 27, 2014, Sherman received the “NFC Defensive Player of the Week” award for the “Thanksgiving Day Game.” He made 57 total tackles, 45 of which were solo, eight pass deflections, and four interceptions in 2014.

He participated for his team in “Super Bowl XLIX” in February 2015, however the “Seahawks” were defeated by the “New England Patriots.” Sherman received Tommy John surgery for a ruptured elbow ligament after this game.
He received the ‘PFWA (Pro-Football Writers Association) Good Guy Award’ during the 2014 campaign, making him the second consecutive ‘Seahawk’ to do so. The “Kansas City Committee” also gave him the “NFC Defensive Player of the Year” award.

Sherman was chosen to the ‘Pro-Bowl’ for the third straight season in December 2015. He made all 16 starts for the 2015 campaign, recording 50 total tackles, 14 pass deflections, and 2 interceptions. He was selected for the “Second Team All-Pro,” and his teammates ranked him 20th in the “NFL Top 100 of 2016” list.

His performance in the second half of the 2016 campaign was hampered by a sprained MLC in his right knee. He was chosen for the “2017 Pro-Bowl,” but in 2017, he struggled with his Achilles, forcing him to exit a game midway through the 10th week of the season. He was unable to continue the season.

On March 10, 2018, he signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the “San Francisco 49ers” after being released from the “Seattle Seahawks” on March 9.
