Royston William Langdon is presently a member of the British alternative rock group Spacehog. He is the band’s primary vocalist and bassist. After beginning his singing career in a local church choir, he joined the band his brother founded in 1994 in New York. A year later, Sire Records published their debut album, “Resident Alien.” The album’s success generated the youth song “In the Meantime.” In 1998 and 2001, they released “The Chinese Album” and “The Odyssey,” respectively. Langdon, his brothers Anthony and Christian, and Jonny Cragg founded the new group Arckid in 2005, following the group’s dissolution in 2002. During the subsequent three years, they released several singles. In the end, Spacehog reunited in 2008 and released their most recent album, ‘As It Is on Earth,’ in 2013.
Royston Langdon’s Career
Royston Langdon started his musical career with the band Spacehog. Although all band members are from Leeds, West Yorkshire, ‘Spacehog’ was formed in New York City when Langdon’s brother, Anthony, met Jonny Cragg by happenstance in a café. Anthony recruited Royston, and Cragg recruited his friend Richard Steel. They signed a contract with Sire Records the same year.
The band’s debut album, ‘Resident Alien,’ was released on October 24, 1995, and sold over 500,000 copies in the United States and over one million copies in Canada, earning Gold and Platinum certifications, respectively. The track “In the Meantime” reached number one on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and remained there for four consecutive weeks.
In 1996, they published their debut EP titled “Hamsters of Rock.” Their second studio album, The Chinese Album, was released on March 10, 1998. Produced by Bryce Goggin and Spacehog, the album’s music had a more artistic character, demonstrating an obvious Pink Floyd influence. Even though the record was not as commercially successful as ‘Resident Alien,’ Spacehog remained popular by opening for Pearl Jam and Supergrass.
After the release of their second album, Langdon and his band were dropped by Sire Records and signed with Artemis Records. Their album, ‘The Hogyssey’, was released on April 10, 2001. Despite its modest success, it is now regarded as a turning point in the development of glam rock as a genre.
In 2001, Spacehog embarked on a North American tour with The Black Crowes and Oasis titled The Tour of Brotherly Love. Before disbanding in 2002, they released a second EP titled “4 Future Tracks.”
Langdon and a former member of Blind Melon formed the band “The Quick” in 2004. They later changed the group’s name to The Tender Trio after meeting numerous problems when touring under the prior moniker.
Langdon, his two brothers Anthony and Christian, and Cragg created Arckid in March 2006, following the official dissolution of The Tender Trio. Langdon continued to serve as the band’s main vocalist and bassist.
As they maintained true to their glam rock and alternative rock roots, their music was heavily influenced by David Bowie, Queen, and T. Rex. They recorded famous singles such as “Disguise My Youth,” “Girls Like You Like Me,” and “Only Dreaming” between 2006 and 2009.
In July 2008, Cragg stated on Arckid’s MySpace page that Spacehog would reform to make a new album. Earlier that month, they had performed at two renowned nightclubs in Los Angeles, California: the Viper Room and the Troubadour. A year later, they officially reunited at Spaceland in Los Angeles.
On April 16, 2013, they released “As It Is on Earth” under the Redeye label after five years of development.
