Robert Cormier was an American author and journalist best known for his pessimistic novels and short stories. He wrote eight major novels and a number of short tales, the majority of which are aimed at young adults. Despite his lack of initial commercial success, he was consistently praised by critics. Abuse, betrayal, mental illness, violence, and retribution are important themes throughout his books and short tales. Another intriguing aspect of his tales is that good does not always triumph over evil. His novels’ inclination to emphasize the ‘bad’ resulted in his books being rejected by educational institutions and library lists. However, the author and various commentators have characterized his work as a realistic portrayal of human nature. Some of his writings were first banned due to the dark, controversial character of his stories. They have, however, been accepted into mainstream publishing firms and have been translated into a variety of languages throughout time. His books are widely recommended in the New York Times and School Library Journal, and routinely feature on the American Library Association’s list of “Best Books for Young Adults.”
