Ken Wilber is one of the world’s most influential philosophers today. He is America’s most widely translated academic author, having had 25 books translated into more than 30 foreign languages. Wilber’s philosophy is influenced by Madhyamaka Buddhism, most notably as articulated in Nagarjuna’s philosophy. His integral approach gained widespread acceptance following the publication of his first book, The Spectrum of Consciousness, a synthesis of religion, philosophy, physics, and psychology that served as the foundation for all subsequent attempts to integrate psychology and spirituality. Childhood & Adolescence
Kenneth Earl Wilber II was born in Oklahoma City on January 31, 1949. He had a relatively happy childhood as an only child, as his parents largely allowed him to do as he pleased.
His father served in the air force, and the family never stayed in one place for an extended period of time, necessitating a high degree of adaptability on his part. He graduated from Great Falls High School in Montana.
At high school, he was dubbed ‘the brain’ for consistently topping the class, which he despised because he desired popularity and downplayed his intellectual ability.
He enrolled at Duke University in 1967 as a pre-med student but left to earn a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology and a master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

The holon is a central concept in his approach. He observed that it appears as though every entity/concept has a dual nature: as a self-contained entity and as a component of something else. He outlines approximately twenty tenets that characterize all holons in his 1995 book ‘Sex, Ecology, Spirituality: The Spirit of Evolution’. These tenets serve as the foundation for Wilber’s manifest reality model.
He kept a journal of his personal experiences in 1997 and later published as ‘One Taste’, a term for unitary consciousness, in 1999. He explained that the body, mind, and the luminosities of the soul are all perfect expressions of the Radiant Spirit.
He used the “spectrum of consciousness” model to rewrite our approach to such critical fields as psychology, spirituality, anthropology, art, and planetary transformation in his ground-breaking 1997 book ‘The Eye Of Spirit.’
In 2002, the novel ‘Boomeritis: A Novel That Will Set You Free’ introduced the concept of ‘Boomeritis,’ a lethal synthesis of a modern liberal, egalitarian worldview and an unquestioning narcissism prevalent among Baby Boomers.
‘The Simple Feeling of Being,’ published in 2004, is a collection of spiritual passages that demonstrates his integral “theory of everything” and asserts that “we are looking at Spirit or enlightenment, we just don’t recognize it.”
He founded ‘The Integral Institute’ in 1998 to integrate the diverse viewpoints found in major fields of knowledge. The institute has several branches, including psychology, business, medicine, law, art, and spirituality.
