Early Childhood of Khaled Hosseini
Khlaed Hosseini grew raised in Kabul, the oldest of five children born to Nasser, an Afghan ambassador. Hosseini’s mother taught Persian in an all-girls high school.
With their careers, Hosseini’s parents provided him with a comfortable existence in Wazir Akbar Khan, one of Kabul’s wealthiest neighborhoods and home to the American embassy.
After getting a job in Paris, Nasser transferred Khaled and his family there.
Since Afghanistan was invaded by the Soviets in 1980, the Hosseini family migrated to San Jose, California. Eight years later, Hosseini received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Santa Clara University.
A Career of Khaled Hosseini
In 1999, he graduated from the UC San Diego School of Medicine. In four years, he received his M.D. Hosseini did his residency in internal medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and practiced for almost ten years.
Dr. Hosseini authored his first novel, “The Kite Runner,” about a young kid who has to struggle with a faraway father from Afghanistan to California.
After a year and a half of writing the novel, Hosseini left his medical profession to focus on writing full time.
‘A Thousand Splendid Suns,’ published in 2007, spanned a longer period of time and two characters’ lives than ‘The Kite Runner.’ This novel’s female protagonists emphasized the inequality prevalent in Afghan culture.
Marc Forster (Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland, Quantum of Solace) adapted The Kite Runner into a film in 2007. Hosseini has a cameo in the movie.
On May 21, 2013, he published ‘And the Mountains Echoed’. It was a multi-generational saga of family, sacrifice, love, treachery, and honor. The novel has sold over three million copies.
