Jewel Aich is a well-known Bangladeshi magician and artist who has gained international acclaim for his unique feats and spectacular performances. His fascination with magic began when he was a child, when he saw a gypsy perform magic, followed by a circus ensemble. While this introduced him to the realm of magic, it was after reading Indian magician P.C. Sorkar’s book that he became hooked on this incredibly inventive art form. Magic was not his only talent; he was also enamored with the bamboo flute known as the Bansuri, which he studied in order to pursue as a career. By the time he graduated from high school, he had already established himself as a household name throughout his district. He served in the Bangladesh Liberation War in addition to carving out a space for himself in the creative world. He has performed all around the world, including in the United States, and has appeared on numerous television shows to demonstrate his talent. He’s been dubbed “The World’s Most Artistic Illusionist” on several occasions. This renowned magician has won various prizes, including the Ekushey Padak, one of Bangladesh’s highest civilian decorations.

Childhood and Adolescence

Jewel Aich was born on April 10, 1950, as the fifth of nine children to merchant B.K. Aich in Shomdekathi village, Shorupkathi Thana, Barisal district, Bangladesh.

He suffered from chronic migraines as a child, forcing him to isolate himself from his peers. As a result, he became an introvert and gradually developed an interest in magic.

After seeing a gypsy guy perform at his family’s home, his love for magic grew even more. Furthermore, he developed an interest in playing the Bansuri flute and began taking lessons from his village buddy, Poritosh Mondol.
Fascinated by a magician’s neck-cutting trick at a circus act, he made a special wooden trick knife and performed leg-cutting magic on one of his buddies in front of a crowd.

His enthusiasm for magic became greater while reading the books of Bangladeshi artist-writer Bonde Ali Miah, but the idea of becoming a professional magician struck him while reading the book of renowned Indian magician P.C. Sorkar.

Even before completing his education, he produced more feats and became well-known as a magician and Bansuri player. He completed his higher education at Dhaka’s Jagannath University.

After graduating from college, he began focusing on perfecting his tricks and began receiving offers for gigs. This was the start of a long and illustrious career.

During the Bangladesh Liberation War in the early 1970s, he joined the army and fought in the combat war (Shommukh Juddho) for an independent Bangladesh.

Even when he was ill during the war, he performed magic acts for the military and taught pupils in refugee camps.
Mostafa Kamal Wahid showed his magic clippings to Americans in 1979, and they were well received.
In 1981, he was invited to give a live performance in front of thousands of magicians in America by the Society of American Magicians.

In 1997, he traveled to Dhaka to perform magic on the show of Abdullah Abu Sayeed, a well-known Bangladeshi television broadcaster. The tremendous positive response from the crowd encouraged him to appear on other television shows on a regular basis.

He has wowed audiences in major cities all over the world with his magical acts, in addition to touring all across Bangladesh.

He is well-known not just as a skilled magician, but also as a Bansuri player. He is a regular performer at Bangladesh Betar, a state-owned radio station, where he plays the flute in the ‘Voice of America’ program.
