William John Scott, better known as Bill Scott, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Little is known about his upbringing or education.

Career of Bill

He began his career in the US Army’s First Motion Picture Unit during World War II. He collaborated with animators like Frank Thomas in the early years.

He rose to prominence as a’story man’ after the war. At Warner Brothers, he worked under director Arthur Davis.
He then went to Universal Productions of America’s avant-garde studio, where he worked as a writer.

He and Phil Eastman were in charge of adapting Dr. Seuss’s original story into the 1951 Academy Award-winning animated short film “Gerald McBoing-Boing.”

Later, ‘Gerald McBoing-Boing’ was adapted into a television show of the same name. The United States National Film Registry chose it for preservation because it is culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.

Two years later, he and other writers adapted Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Tell-Tale Heart,’ another Academy Award nominated short animation film.

He began his career as a voice actor only later, when he joined Jay Ward as the head writer, co-producer, and voice artist. He did voice-over work for a number of television shows, including ‘The Rock and Bullwinkle Show.’ He rose to prominence as the voice of Bullwinkle and Dudley Do-Right on the animated series Bullwinkle and Dudley Do-Right.

He tried his hand at acting in addition to writing adventure scripts, producing shows, and providing voiceover for animated characters. He appeared in films such as ‘George of the Jungle,’ ‘Super Chicken,’ and ‘Tom Slick,’ as well as ‘Fractured Flickers,’ and ‘Hoppity Hooper,’ among others.

He also appeared in the live-action television show ‘The Duck Factory,’ which starred Jim Carrey, Don Messick, and Frank Welker.

He went on to work for Walt Disney Studios later in his career. He did voice work for a few shows, including The Wuzzles, where he was the voice artist for Moosel, and Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears, where he was the voice of GruffiGummi. His last role before his death was as a voice over for GruffiGummi.

He was a talented singer and performer in addition to writing and serving as a voice artist. He was a member of the Football Curtain raisers, a Tujunga Little Theatre group.

Aside from performing, he aided a number of aspiring young stars in difficult times and encouraged aspiring actors and musicians.

Personal History and Legacy

He married Dorothy and they had a child. Three children were born to the couple. Due to cardiac arrest, he passed away on November 29, 1985. His wife and children survived him.

The Wuzzles’ upcoming episodes and seasons were canceled following his death. His part in Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears was also recast with new actors.
