Childhood and Adolescence

Tamron Hall was born in Luling, Texas, on September 16, 1970. Her mother Mary Newton and stepfather Clarence Newton Sr. raised her. “I was born to a different father,” Tamron explained in an interview. “But God brought in my stepfather, who should have been my father.”

Her stepfather, who spent most of his adult life in the military, instilled in her a sense of order and discipline, as well as encouraged her to pursue a career as a journalist.

She graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism.

The Career of Tamron

Tamron Hall began her broadcasting career as a general assignment reporter for KBTX in Bryan, Texas. Later, she moved to KTVT, a CBS-owned and operated television station in Fort Worth, Texas, serving the Dallas market.

She joined WFLD-TV, a Fox-owned and operated television station in Chicago, Illinois, in 1997, and as a former Chicago native, she reported on local politics.

She hosted the three-hour ‘Fox News in the Morning’ at WFLD-TV, where she covered numerous ‘breaking news stories, including Amtrak’s deadly train-truck crash in 1999. In 1999, she started a consumer report program called ‘The Bottom Line.’

She worked at WFLD-TV in a variety of roles, including general assignment reporter and consumer reporter, as well as anchoring weekday mornings. In 2007, she resigned from WFLD-TV.

In 2007, she joined the MSNBC national news network, where she stayed for ten years. She worked as a general reporter and fill-in anchor on the ‘Countdown with Keith Olbermann’ program, where she first rose to notoriety as a substitute anchor alongside Keith Olbermann.

Her one-on-one conversation with Barack Obama before he announced his presidential candidacy in 2008 was well-received. Following that, she joined David Shuster as co-host of ‘The Big Picture,’ a two-hour show that aired from June 2009 to January 2010.

When ‘News Nation with Tamron Hall’ first aired in 2010, she was the host. It aired on weekdays and featured high-profile interviews as well as news from the United States, the world, and entertainment, including a live television broadcast from Ground Zero in New York City when Osama Bin Laden’s death was confirmed.

In 2011, she covered the final launch of the space shuttle, as well as Hurricane Isaac in 2012. In October 2010, she was a correspondent for the NBC News special program “The Inauguration of Barack Obama.”

She began anchoring another Investigation Discovery series, ‘Deadline: Crime with Tamron Hall,’ in September 2013. Hall and her investigative team found facts of each crime—why and how things transpired in each case—for this weekly newsmagazine. She dedicated the show to her older sister, whose death was the result of a homicide that has yet to be solved.

When she started hosting NBC’s ‘Today’ in 2014, she made history as the first African-American woman to serve as a co-anchor on the show. She filled in for main co-anchors Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie on a regular basis.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom, Australian actor Hugh Jackman, and American diva Mariah Carey were among the people she spoke with for the show.

She was seen climbing over rugged terrain in the Pink Cliffs of southern Utah for two days with Bear Grylls in an episode of ‘Running Wild with Bear Grylls’ in 2014.

In February 2017, Hall resigned from NBC News and MSNBC. She was informed that she would no longer be a co-anchor on ‘Today,’ according to reports.

Her show would be shortened by one hour to make way for a new daytime chat show. According to reports, NBC gave her a “substantial financial inducement” to stay with the network, but she declined.

She linked up with Harvey Weinstein, founder of The Weinstein Firm and co-founder of Miramax, a film and television production company, in July of 2017. Her new role has multiple facets: she will host and executive produce her own daytime chat show, which will be called in the near future.

The show will premiere in 2018 and will include entertainment news, current events news, interviews, and human-interest topics. She will also act as executive producer for additional planned Weinstein Television productions.

She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, which has accused NBC of “whitewashing” by canceling Hall’s show and replacing it with a new show hosted by former Fox News personality Megyn Kelly.

Kelly was also chastised by the group, which claimed she “had a well-documented history of derogatory remarks regarding people of color.”

Hall spoke out against domestic abuse as part of Today’s ‘Shine A Light’ campaign. Domestic and dating abuse, homelessness, poverty, and other societal ills are among the issues addressed by the program.

She hopes to establish a Public Schools Association to raise awareness about emotionally and physically abusive relationships among teenagers in schools. She raises money for Day One New York, Inc., an organization that fights dating abuse. They’ve raised nearly $40,000 thus far.
