The Ascension to Stardom

While studying performing arts at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in Westminster, Jaymi Hensley met Josh Cuthbert. Cuthbert had previously failed the bootcamp round of the fourth series of ‘The X Factor,’ but got in contact with Blair Dreelan of Alpha Dog Management, who wanted to place him in a band. Dreelan formed a band with Hensley and Cuthbert, subsequently adding former jockey Jamie “JJ” Hamblett and dubbed it the “Triple J.” In May 2012, Hensley and the band auditioned for the ninth season of ‘The X Factor’ in London.

They made it through the next stages, but were eventually defeated by GMD3, which was sent to the judges’ houses. After Rough Copy was forced to leave the show, the producers of ‘The X Factor’ granted the band a chance to return on the condition that they add soloist George Shelley to the lineup. The band was dubbed ‘Union J’ and advanced to the judges’ houses after that.

They became extremely popular on social media, accounting for over half of all ‘The X Factor’ online discussions. They were eliminated in the semifinals on December 2, 2012, after finishing fourth after three appearances in the bottom two. Despite this, the band secured a record deal with Sony Music Entertainment on December 15, 2012, and their debut single, “Carry You,” reached number six on the UK singles chart in June 2013.

 State of being famous

Jaymi Hensley made headlines not just for his work in the band or on the cooking show; as an out homosexual man, he frequently utilizes his platform to support LGBT causes. When he was fourteen years old, he came out to his family and friends for the first time. They were unfazed by it and accepted it without reservation. His mentor Louis Walsh later urged him to come out publicly during his tenure on ‘The X Factor.’ From the outset, the members of the band were aware of his sexuality.

On November 18, 2012, he came out as gay, with the full support of his bandmates and Walsh. He insisted, however, that he did not divulge this in order to get attention; rather, he wanted to be honest and inspire others who were dealing with their sexuality. He also announced that he has been dating Olly Marmon, a hairstylist, since 2009. He proposed to his boyfriend during a Christmas trip to Rome in 2010, and the couple married in 2014. He posed with his fiancée for a photoshoot for Attitude magazine’s gay marriage issue in March of that year.

He was apparently close to his former band mate George Shelley, and after Shelley’s lawyer claimed that the other members of the band were jealous of his success, he released a statement on behalf of the band claiming that the decision was mutual and that there were no hard feelings.
