Childhood of Jack Johnson

Jack Hody Johnson was born on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, on May 18, 1975. He is the youngest of three siblings and the son of Jeff Johnson, a well-known surfer.
Jack, like his father, began surfing lessons when he was five years old, spending around three to four hours every day surfing. However, surfing was not Jack’s sole interest; music became an important part of his life as well.
Trent, his older brother, was a member of a band, and Jack progressively became interested in music as well. He was intrigued to tinkering with and manipulating the guitar amplifier’s reverb, and eventually taught himself to play the instrument.

Jack excelled at both of his skills. He did, however, receive an invitation to the ‘Pipeline Masters’ finals when he was seventeen years old. What appeared to be the beginnings of a professional surfing career was cut short when he was injured in an accident at the ‘Pipeline.’

The encounter changed Jack’s life forever, and he finally became more humble and down to earth as a result of it.
After graduating from high school, Jack applied to the ‘University of California’ in Santa Barbara. It was here that he started writing his own songs and using music to charm his college sweetheart, Kim. In 1997, he graduated from the University with a B.A. in Film Studies.
