Alan Simpson’s Childhood
Alan Simpson was born in Denver, Colorado, on September 2, 1931, to the parents of the former Wyoming governor, Milward L. Simpson, and Loretta Kooi.
He received his education from schools such as Cody High School in Wyoming and Cranbrook School in Michigan. In 1954, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wyoming in Laramie.
Alan Simpson’s Career
He served in the ‘Fifth Infantry Division’, ‘The Tenth Infantry Regiment, and ‘The Twelfth Armoured Infantry Battalion of the ‘United States Army’ between 1954 and 1956.
After completing his legal education at the University of Wyoming (UW) Law School in 1958, he joined the Wyoming Bar Association and began practicing law in the Cody area.
In 1958, he was named Assistant Attorney General of Wyoming, a position he held for one year.
This politician served as the City Attorney of Cody, Wyoming, from 1959 to 1969.
Additionally, he served as president of the UW Alumni Association for one year. From 1964 to 1977, he served as a member of the Wyoming House of Representatives.
In November 1978, he was appointed to the ‘United States Senate’ as a Senator from Wyoming, and he assumed office at the start of the next year, following the resignation of the previous Senator. He resumed his position as Senator for two additional terms.
From 1981 to 1985, he presided over the “Veterans Affairs Committee.” Approximately 10 years later, he served as the Republican Party’s Whip and supported Bob Dole, the party’s leader at the time, in managing the party’s affairs. He was succeeded as Whip by Trent Lott.
After the Republican Party won control of the Senate in 1995, he served as chairman of the ‘Veteran Affairs Committee’ again from 1995 to 1997.
This leader was also the head of numerous other organizations, including the “Social Security Subcommittee,” “The Immigration and Refugee Subcommittee of Judiciary,” “The Committee on Aging,” and “The Nuclear Regulation Subcommittee.”
After leaving from politics in 1997, Simpson became a guest lecturer at the Joan Shorenstein Center of the John F. Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge.
He was also named the Director of the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.
In the year 2000, he and his two sons Colin and William began practicing law in Wyoming. He was chosen Commissioner of the American Battle Monuments Commission the following year.
