Anna Chicherova is a Russian high jumper who won gold in the 2012 Olympics in London. She also won gold and bronze medals at the 2011 World Athletics Championships and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Childhood and Adolescence

Anna Chicherova was born in the Soviet Union’s Yerevan region on July 22, 1982. Her father was a professional high jumper, therefore she grew up in a sports-oriented home. Anna began her high jump training at the age of seven, with the help of her father. Her training sessions proceeded well until the Soviet Union fell apart, forcing her family to relocate to Belaya Klitva, a small Russian town near Rostov. Anna continued her training there under the direction of coach Alexei Bondarenko, whilst her father was forced to seek alternative employment as a railway station worker.

Career of Anna Chicherova

Anna Chicherova began her athletic career at the Russian Sports Academy when she was 16 years old. She received her training here under Alexander Fetisov’s supervision. She won the 1999 World Youth Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, with a leap of 1.89 meters under his supervision.

She finished fourth in the 2000 World Junior Championships in Santiago, Chile, with a leap of 1.85 meters. Her personal best by 2002 was 1.92 meters, only 3 centimeters higher than her jump at the 1999 World Youth Championships. During this period, she enlisted the help of Yevgeny Zagorluko as a coach, and she began training with him.

Anna’s career took a big turn in 2003, when she improved her personal best in the high jump by 12 cm and won the Yekaterinburg Christmas Cup with a jump of 2.04m. In the same year, she placed third with a jump of 1.99m at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham and won gold with a jump of 1.89m at the Military World Games in Catania, Italy.

With a jump of 2.0m, she won silver at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in 2004. She competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics, however her performance was underwhelming, and she finished sixth.
She won gold medals at the European Indoor Championships (2.01m) in Madrid, Spain, and the Universiade (1.90m) in Izmir, Turkey, both in 2005.

Her jump of 2.03m earned her a silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan. She competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and won bronze with a jump of 2.03m. Anna won silver in the 2009 World Championships, which were held in Berlin, Germany. Her effort this time was 2.02m. Due to her pregnancy, she was unable to participate in the 2010 season.

She ultimately won the gold medal in the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, with a leap of 2.03m.
Her most notable triumph came in 2012, when she won the gold medal in the London Olympics with a jump of 2.05 meters. With a jump of 1.97m, she earned bronze in the World Championships in Moscow, Russia in 2013.
