Brian Joseph Chesky is an American businessman who started Airbnb with two other people. Airbnb is an online service that lets travelers book places to stay. He is also the CEO of Airbnb. In 2015, Time magazine named him one of the “100 Most Influential People.” Chesky started out as an entrepreneur when he was in college and ran a hockey team. When his hockey team got canceled at the last minute, he and his teammates started thinking of a new name for their team. They changed the team and gave it a new mascot as its logo, which gave it a new lease on life. In a similar way, he came up with the idea for Airbnb when he was having trouble with money in 2007. Chesky and the other people who lived with him needed money, so they rented out their apartment. In the end, this led to the start of Airbnb, which grew slowly and gave travelers looking for a place to stay better options. One of the most important reasons for his success is that he cared more about his customers and the services they needed than he did about the ideas of the developers.
Brian Chesky’s Career
Brian Chesky went to college and then got a job at 3DID in Los Angeles as an industrial designer and strategist. Later, he moved to San Francisco and began living with his friend Gebbia in an apartment they shared. Chesky came up with the idea for Airbnb in the year 2007.
When the Industrial Designers Society of America held its conference in San Francisco, he and Gebbia were living together in the same apartment. All of the hotel rooms were taken during this conference. Because it was hard for the two of them to pay their rent, they decided to rent their apartment to the conference guests for money.
They came up with the idea of “Airbed and Breakfast” and bought three air mattresses for the three people who stayed with them the first night.
In February 2008, Nathan Blecharczyk, a technical architect and Harvard graduate, became the third co-founder of Airbnb. Each co-founder took on a different job, and Chesky became the CEO and leader of the company. Chesky and his co-founders came up with a creative way to get money for their business.
They made special-edition cereals called “Obama O’s” and “Cap’n McCains,” which were based on the presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain. The limited-edition cereals made Y Combinator’s seed accelerator program think that Airbnb was a good idea, so they let Airbnb join their seed funding program.
Soon, many offices of the company opened in Europe. In 2011, Chesky said that there would be a 24-hour hotline for residents to call with complaints and that there would be more staff on hand in case of theft or vandalism. More than 120,000 people stayed in Airbnb homes during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. By March of 2015, Airbnb was worth $20 billion. Airbnb became a sponsor of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2015.
Forbes named Chesky one of America’s Richest Entrepreneurs Under 40 in 2015. He was also on TIME’s list of the “100 Most Influential People of 2015.” In May 2015, Barack Obama, who was US president at the time, made him an Ambassador of Global Entrepreneurship.
In 2016, he joined “The Giving Pledge,” which is a group of billionaires who promise to give away most of their money. He was also on the 2016 list of the Youngest Forbes 400.
