Galafassi eventually left Gelbison and, in 2006, formed Toni Collette & the Finish with his wife, Australian actor and singer Toni Collette. The group released its first album, Beautiful Awkward Pictures, in October 2006. Galafassi and Collette have two children, Sage Florence and Arlo Roberts. Their family is based in Sydney, Australia, and they also own a property in Ireland.
Childhood & Early Life
Dave Galafassi was born in 1978 and grew up in Port Macquarie, located on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, Australia. He developed an interest in music during his teenage years and began taking drum lessons. Through regular practice and dedication, he developed his skills as a drummer and started performing with various Australian bands.
Career of Dave Galafassi
Galafassi began his musical career in the early 1990s. In 2002, he became the drummer for the Sydney-based indie pop-rock band Gelbison, which had been formed in 2000 by Pete Farley. The group consisted of Farley on bass guitar, Galafassi on drums, and brothers Edo and Nadav Kahn, who contributed vocals, guitar, and keyboards.
The band performed at numerous venues in and around Sydney. On April 7, 2003, Gelbison released its debut album, 1704, through Virgin Records and EMI Music Group Australia. Produced by Ian Ball, the album reached number 20 on the ARIA Hitseekers Albums Chart and received favorable reviews.
Before the album’s release, the band had already released several singles. Their first single, Metal Detector, came out in October 2002, followed by Homelands in February 2003 and Good God in May 2003. By this time, Galafassi had married Australian actor and singer Toni Collette, who directed the music video for Good God.
Galafassi left Gelbison before the group released its second album. The band later officially disbanded in 2007.
In January 2006, Galafassi and his wife, Toni Collette, formed the band Toni Collette & The Finish. Collette contributed as the group’s singer and songwriter alongside her acting career. Pete Farley, Galafassi’s former bandmate from Gelbison, later joined the group.
The band’s debut album, Beautiful Awkward Pictures, was released on October 7, 2006, through Hoola Hoop Records. It included songs such as Look Up, Trouble With Sister, Beautiful Awkward Pictures, This Moment Is Golden, Mosaic Life, and Tender Hooks. The album reached number 12 on the AIR Indie Distro Albums Chart. The title single was released on September 2, 2006, and peaked at number 8.
The band toured Australia during late 2006 and early 2007 and received a positive response from audiences. In November 2006, they recorded their first televised performance at the Sydney Opera House for Max Sessions. The program aired in January 2007 and reportedly achieved strong ratings.
In 2007, Toni Collette & the Finish also performed at the Australian edition of the Live Earth concert in Sydney. The group did not release another album after its debut, as its members became involved in other professional projects. Galafassi subsequently continued working as a drummer with other Australian rock bands.
In addition to his musical career, Galafassi appeared in the 2013 comedy-drama film Lucky Them, directed by Megan Griffiths, where he played a club drummer.
Family & Personal Life
Dave Galafassi first met Australian actor and singer Toni Collette after one of his band’s performances in Sydney. They later met again at a barbecue gathering, began dating, and became engaged in 2002.
The couple married in January 2003 at Collette’s country home in Broughton, near Berry on the New South Wales south coast. Their wedding followed a Buddhist ceremony and was celebrated over an entire weekend, featuring dancing monks, vegetarian meals, and fireworks.
They have two children. Their daughter, Sage Florence Galafassi, was born in Sydney on January 9, 2008. Their son, Arlo Roberts Galafassi, was also born in Sydney, on Good Friday, April 22, 2011.
