Childhood & Adolescence
David Davy Crockett was born in Greene County, Tennessee, to John Crockett and Rebecca Hawkins. John Crockett was an American frontiersman and soldier.
He began accompanying his father and elder brothers on hunting expeditions at the age of eight. He dropped out of school and ran away from home when he was thirteen years old.
He returned home in 1799 and began repaying his father’s debt to a man named John Kennedy.
Career of Davy
In 1813, he served in the Creek War under Colonel John Coffee and was enlisted as a scout in the Second Regiment of Tennessee Volunteer Mounted Riflemen for 90 days.
He was elected lieutenant colonel of the Fifty-seventh Militia regiment of the Tennessee Militia on March 27, 1818.
On September 17, 1821, he was elected to the Tennessee State House of Representatives’ Committee on Propositions and Grievances.
In 1826, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives as a ‘Jacksonian,’ but later became a ‘Anti- Jacksonian.’
He opposed President Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Act, which resulted in his defeat in the 1830 elections. He was elected to the 23rd Congress in 1833 and served until 1835, when he was defeated in re-election bids.
On November 1, 1835, he embarked with three other men on a journey to Texas to explore the state.
On February 23, 1836, he arrived in Alamo and took part in a siege against Mexican soldiers, firing at them along with his fellow comrades. The battle lasted 90 minutes and eventually forced the Mexican soldiers to withdraw. The siege between Texan and Mexican troops lasted until March 6, 1836, when the Mexican troops emerged victorious after 13 days and killed all Texan soldiers, including Crockett.

At the age of nineteen, he became engaged to Margaret Elder, but she married another man. He was profoundly moved by this incident.
He married Mary Polly Finley in 1806, and the couple went on to have two children. In 1815, he passed away.
He married Elizabeth Patton in 1815, following the death of his first wife, Mary Polly Finley. The couple had three children together.
David Crockett’s autobiography, titled ‘A Narrative of His Life in the State of Tennessee,’ was published in 1834. He died in ‘The Battle of Alamo’ in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 49.
In 1959, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation dedicated a state park to Crockett in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.
In 1954, the ABC network aired a five-part serial titled ‘Davy Crockett.’ Each hour-long episode was inspired by his own experiences and those of his friend George Russel.
