American football player Derek Dallas Carr competes for the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). He currently earns among the highest salaries of any quarterback in NFL history. He followed in the footsteps of his older brother David Carr, an NFL quarterback who was also born and reared in California. Carr participated in high school football in Bakersfield, California, and Texas before enrolling at ‘Fresno State University.’ He was twice voted the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year while playing at Fresno State. He was also twice included in the All-America Selection. He set numerous school records in addition to a number of national records. In the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, he was chosen by the Oakland Raiders. He is one of just 19 FBS quarterbacks who have thrown for more than 10,000 yards and 100 touchdowns. His 113-to-24 touchdown-to-interception ratio ranks second in FBS history. He was selected for the Pro-Bowl three times in a row. Carr has two boys with Heather Neel, with whom he is married.
Early Childhood & Life
Rodger and Sheryl Carr welcomed Derek Carr into the world on March 28, 1991 in Bakersfield, California. The youngest of three siblings, he is. The “Houston Texans” picked his older brother David Carr first overall in 2002. After moving to Sugar Land, Texas, the family later moved back to Bakersfield for Derek Carr’s final year.
Carr began playing football on the school’s freshmen squad while attending the “Clements High School” in Sugar Land, Texas. He was a backup quarterback in his second season when another quarterback suffered a preseason injury, but he requested to start that game.
He guided the Clements High School Rangers to a 13-0 record and an unbeaten season during his junior year, although they were eliminated in the third-round of the 2007 Class 5A Division 2 State Playoffs. During his junior year, he received scholarship offers from institutions. Carr attended Bakersfield Christian High School for his final year (in May 2008, he verbally committed to Fresno State University). He guided the ‘Eagle’s’ squad to a 12-1 record, and they took home the Central Section Division V Championship of the California Interscholastic Federation. On October 29, 2008, “ESPN RISE” named him the “National Football Player of the Week,” and “The Bakersfield Californian” named him the “2008 All-Area Football Player of the Year.” Carr was chosen as the 2009 “National Player of the Year” by the “National Private Schools Athletic Association” at the conclusion of his senior year.
Career in College
Carr enrolled in the ‘Fresno State University’ during the spring 2009 semester. He sat out the 2010 campaign and joined the “Fresno State Team” in the fall of 2011 as the starting quarterback. He played for his college squad for three years. He received the title of “MWC Offensive Player of the Year” in 2012 and went on to win it consecutively for two seasons, becoming only the second player in league history to do so. He received the “2013 CFPA Elite QB Award” in recognition of his performance over the course of his three seasons at the university. He was a leader in the Mountain West Conference’s (MWC) various statistical categories. He also took home the Sammy Baugh Trophy, which is given to the best collegiate passer in the country.
He established 21 “Mountain West Conference” records and 27 new school records at “Fresno State University.” Due to his strong academic standing, Carr was named the “2013 National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete.” He was just the third player in the school’s history to achieve this feat.
Carr led the league in many records in 2013, including total offense (5,199), passing yards (5,082), passing yards per game (390.9), and throwing touchdowns (50). He was chosen for the ‘2013 Capital One Academic All-America Second team. He participated in the 2014 Senior Bowl as the South team’s starting quarterback.
Career in the Profession
The ‘Oakland Raiders’ selected Carr with the 36th overall choice in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He agreed to a four-year, $5.37 million contract in May 2014, including a $2.2 million signing bonus.
In the history of the “Raiders team,” he became the first rookie quarterback to start the season opener. He had a high ankle sprain and an MLC sprain in Week 4 of the season, forcing him to abandon the game. He established a new Raiders franchise mark on October 12 for the most throwing touchdowns by a rookie in a single regular season game with 4 touchdown passes.
Carr’s (previously winless) Raiders defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 24-20 in November 2014, then on December 7 they defeated the San Francisco 49ers 24-13 to earn their first NFL victory.
He suffered a throwing hand injury before the start of the 2015 season, but by the second week he was back in action and completed the game-winning touchdown pass against the “Baltimore Ravens.” He kept up his winning ways and was selected for the “2016 Pro-Bowl” in January 2016.
Carr got his first “AFC Offensive Player of the Week” award against the “Tampa Bay Buccaneers” in the eighth week of the 2016 campaign. He broke the previous record of 10,000 passing yards during this season, and he also helped the ‘Raiders’ reach their first postseason appearance since 2002.
He was selected for the ‘Pro-Bowl’ for a second year in a row on December 20, 2016. He was injured, though, and was unable to participate in the Pro Bowl. He broke his fibula during a game on Christmas Eve 2016 against the Indianapolis Colts, which prevented him from playing for the rest of the season for the Raiders. On the NFL Top 100 Players of 2017, his teammates ranked him as the 11th best player.
He agreed to a five-year, $125 million contract deal in June 2017, with a signing bonus of $12.5 million, $70 million in total guarantees, and 40 million completely guaranteed. Up until August of 2017 when Matthew Stafford of the “Detroit Lions” shattered his record, he was the highest-paid player in the NFL. The ‘Raiders’ 6-10 record prevented them from making the playoffs in 2017. In January 2018, Carr received his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection.
