Scottish middle-distance runner Eilish McColgan competed for Great Britain at the Olympics in 2012 and 2016. In 2014 and 2018, she competed for Scotland in the Commonwealth Games. Career of Eilish McColgan
In 2006, Eilish McColgan raced in the 1500 metres race at the Scottish School’s Championships and won the silver medal. In the International Under-17s Schools Championships, she also won bronze. She placed fifth in the Scottish Senior Championships the following year. Soon after, she raced in the 1500 meters in Scottish Indoor Championships in 2008 and won the bronze.
McColgan was selected to compete in the Youth Commonwealth Games in 2008. Still, she was unable to compete due to a knee ailment. She was also forced to miss the 2011 World Championships due to her subsequent foot ailment. At the 2011 European Team Championships in Stockholm, Sweden, she made her senior debut for Great Britain. The middle-distance runner was chosen for the 3000 meters steeplechase, where she placed ninth, after first being called in as a traveling reserve. In the 5000 meters, McColgan won silver at the 2011 UK Outdoor Championships. In the 1500 meters, she won a gold medal at the Scottish University Championships in 2011.
At the 2012 Scottish Universities Indoor Championships, McColgan placed first in both the 1500 and 3000 meters events, earning him two gold medals. She went on to win the British trials in a time of 9 minutes 56.90 seconds, confirming her qualification for the steeplechase at the Summer Olympics in 2012. She became the only competitor to complete the race in under ten minutes by accomplishing this accomplishment. The Scottish runner decided not to compete at the 2012 European Athletics Championships despite qualifying for the Olympics. She went on to compete for Great Britain in the women’s 3000 meter steeplechase at the Summer Olympics in 2012. She did not, however, get to the finals this time. She competed in and advanced to the finals of the 2016 Summer Olympics.
In 2017, during the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade, she took home the bronze in the 3000 meters. McColgan took up the silver in the 5000-meter track event at the 2018 European Athletics Championships. She finished in 54:43 to win the Great South Run in Portsmouth in 2018.
