Gaetano Donizetti was one of the three major leaders of the ‘bel canto’ opera style, together with Rossini and Bellini. Donizetti’s musical abilities were identified at a young age. He was enrolled in the Lezioni Caritatevoli School on a full scholarship when he was nine years old. Donizetti composed 71 operas during his lifetime, mastering both humorous and serious operas. With the triumph of his great opera, ‘Zoraida di Granata,’ Donizetti obtained a contract to compose in Naples with Domenico Barbaia, a famous theatre manager. In the 1820s, he was a little success, but in 1830, he shot to fame with his song “Anna Bolena.” He became a well-known opera star throughout Europe after the debut of this opera in Milan. Shortly after, he wrote ‘Lucia di Lammermoor,’ which is considered to be his most famous opera. Rossini and Bellini impacted his work tremendously, and he, like them, produced some of his pieces in Paris, one of which being ‘Marin Faliero.’ Unfortunately, Paris did not endear him to the public, so he moved to Naples. He relocated to Paris in 1838. He was named music director of the Italian opera at Kärntnertortheater and spent the rest of his life in Paris. Donizetti’s operas are remembered, and his compositional technique influenced many contemporaneous and later writers.

Childhood of Gaetano Donizetti

Domenico Gaetano Maria Donizetti was born in Bergamo, northern Italy, in 1797 to an impoverished family. He began working as a music apprentice under Johann Simon Mayr at the age of nine. Donizetti went on to study music at the prestigious Lezioni Caritatevoli School in Bolonga in 1815 with the support of Mayr. Mayr was a staunch supporter of Donizetti’s musical education.

He assisted the young child in honing his musical abilities because he was the one who recognized the boy’s musical abilities. He began taking instruction from Padre Mattei, a well-known counterpoint virtuoso, as he grew older. Donizetti rose from obscurity to international acclaim, and from a musically deficient upbringing to a life dedicated to music.

Career In  Advancement And International Notoriety

Donizetti started writing at a young age, but his works from 1816 through 1817 were never presented. After ‘Enrico di Borgogna’ was performed, he soon picked up speed. This was his first time performing an opera. Donizetti firmly shown his talent in a wide range of operas, including comedies, serious operas, romantic melodramas, and neo-classical themes. With his ‘Zoraide di Grenata,’ he achieved the pinnacle of his career. Domenico Barbaia offered him a contract to write in Naples as a result of his work.

Barbaia was enthralled by Donizetti’s ‘Zoraide di Grenata,’ and felt that if given the chance, he could perform miracles, which he did. Donizetti’s hectic theatre life spanned the next eight years. At the same time, he wrote for Rome, Milan, and Naples. He received a mixed reception, despite the fact that he was well-known in these three locations at the time. Then, in 1830, came his first masterwork, ‘Anna Bolena.’ The opera was staged in Milan, and Donizetti became famous all over the world.

Donizetti was well-known across Europe. Soon after, ‘L’elisir d’amore’ (1832) was published, and it was well received. Donizetti then created ‘Lucia di Lammermoor,’ a chef-d’oeuvre that was based on Sir Walter Scott’s ‘The Bride of Lammermoor.’ Donizetti was well-versed in the best singers of his time, and he based many of his opera roles on their vocal abilities. Following the popularity of ‘Lucrezia Borgia,’ Donizetti traveled to Paris in 1833 to try his luck. ‘Marin Faliero,’ his opera, was a flop. Because his works were compared to Bellini’s, he had a tough time winning over the Paris audience.

As a result, he chose to stage ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’ in Naples. He followed up with another comedic opera, ‘L’elisir d’amore,’ which was also a hit. These two operas are still being performed today. Donizetti composed a great number of pieces in different genres in addition to his operas. His devotees were familiar with his cantatas, religious works, symphonies, string quartets and quintets, as well as countless piano solos, voice and piano pieces, and pieces for piano and other instruments.

Personal Death And Life

Donizetti’s personal life was a disaster. In the 1820s, he met Virginia Vasselli in Rome, and the two married in 1828. Virginia gave birth to three children, but none of them lived to adulthood. In the 1830s, both of his parents died, which was a further setback. The catastrophe was far from over. His wife died a year after his parents died, as a result of a cholera pandemic.

Donizetti, on the other hand, had been suffering from malaises, headaches, nausea, and lightning conditions for decades but had never been treated for them. He was eventually diagnosed with cerebrospinal syphilis. In 1845, Donizetti suffered from paralysis, which was quickly followed by dementia. After his friend Baron Lannoy learned of his illness, he was relocated to his Paris apartment the same year. His Bergamo friends finally got him back to his hometown, where he resided at Baroness Scotti’s palace until his death. Until his death in 1848, he remained isolated from everyone and everything.
