Career of Golshifteh Farahani

Golshifteh Farahani began her acting journey in 1997 with Dariush Mehrjui’s drama film The Pear Tree (Derakht-e-Golabi). Her performance as “Mim” (Mitra) earned her the Simorgh Prize for Best Actress at the Fajr Film Festival. She later starred in the controversial movie Haft Parde (Seven Acts), which was eventually banned in Iran by the government.

In 2003, she appeared in Deux fereshté (Two Angels), a film selected for the Semaine de la Critique section at the Cannes Film Festival. However, this movie was also prohibited in Iran. That same year, her role as “Eti” in Boutique won her Best Actress awards at both the Nantes Three Continents Festival and the House of Cinema Festival in Tehran. In 2004, she received another acting honor at the Kazan International Film Festival for her performance in Ashk-e Sarma (The Tear of the Cold).

Farahani continued to appear in films such as Niwemang (Half Moon), Bab’Aziz: Le prince qui contemplait son âme, and To Each His Cinema, all of which faced bans in Iran. She later acted as “Aisha” in the American spy thriller Body of Lies. The film sparked heavy criticism in Iran, leading Farahani to face backlash from many people in her homeland. In the following years, she gained further international attention through movies such as There Be Dragons, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Family & Personal Life

Golshifteh Farahani was born as Rahavard Farahani on July 10, 1983, in Tehran. She is the daughter of Fahimeh Rahimnia and Behzad Farahani, a well-known actor and theatre director. During her childhood, she attended a music school and later graduated from the Islamic Azad University.

Farahani became involved in controversy after appearing nude in the French magazine Madame Figaro. Iranian authorities reportedly informed her that she would no longer be welcomed back into the country and criticized her artistic choices.

Apart from acting, she has actively supported environmental causes and has served as an ambassador in campaigns against tuberculosis in Iran. After leaving her homeland, she obtained French citizenship and settled in Paris.

She married Amin Mahdavi in 2003, but the marriage ended after a decade. Following her move to France, she married Christos Dorje Walker in 2015; however, the couple separated two years later.
