He was raised in a wealthy family. His mother was a ‘Conservative Party’ politician’s daughter. He received his degree from Oxford’s “Trinity College,” where he served as president of the “Oxford University Conservative Association” and participated in many debates. His first position was with Rothschild, a financial services provider. Later, he established Somerset Capital Management, his own business. At the age of 26, he began his political career and held the position of chairman of the Cities of London and Westminster Conservative Association. He has a reputation for being one of the “Conservative Party’s” most disobedient MPs. He is outspoken about his opposition to abortion, same-sex marriage, and the “European Union.” He is in favor of technology and thinks that efforts to combat climate change shouldn’t impede progress. He is a fervent admirer of the “Christian Church” and the monarchy. He has opposed immigration into the UK and opposes British involvement in foreign conflict zones. He has six kids with Helena de Chair, the woman he is married to. Despite his denial of any intention to lead the UK as prime minister, he is a serious contender to become his party’s leader.

Early Childhood & Life

On May 24, 1969, in Hammersmith, London, England, he was given the name Jacob William Rees-Mogg by his parents, William Rees-Mogg and Gillian Shakespeare Morris. His mother is the daughter of a “Conservative Party” politician who served as the mayor of London’s St. Pancras, while his father was a Times editor.
His older siblings are number three. Annunziata Rees-Mogg, his younger sister, went up to become a freelance journalist with a focus on economics and European politics. Prior to his parents moving to Hinton Blewett, he was initially raised at “Ston Easton Park,” his family’s rural estate. His nanny, Veronica Crook, who has worked for the family for more than 50 years and is currently the governess of his children, nurtured him while he was a student at the independent boys’ preparatory school “Westminster Under School.”

When he was 10 years old, a distant cousin bequeathed him GBP 50, which his father invested on his behalf in the “General Electric Company,” introducing him to the stock market. (GEC). He became interested in the market and afterward went to a shareholders’ meeting of the business.

He attended “Eton College” after graduating from prep school. He developed a reputation for being rigid rather than rebellious there. Both the “Eton College Collections” and the “Faces of 1993 Royal Society of Portrait Painters” exhibit featured his portrait painted by Paul Branson.

In 1991, Jacob Rees-Mogg earned an “Upper Second-Class Honours” degree in history from “Trinity College,” Oxford. He served as the head of the “Oxford University Conservative Association” while in college. He was voted to be the librarian at the “Oxford Union,” where he frequently participated in the debate.

Career of Jacob Rees-Mogg

His first position following college was at Rothschild, an investment banking firm, where he worked alongside renowned fund manager Nils Taube. He moved to Hong Kong in 1993 to work for “Lloyd George Management,” where he met Governor Chris Patten and grew close to him. In 1996, he returned to London, and by 2003, he had advanced to become the head of the “Lloyd George Emerging Markets Fund.”

In 2007, he resigned from “Lloyd George Management” to create his own business, “Somerset Capital Management.” Through Singapore and the Cayman Islands’ tax havens, the business controlled money. He resigned from his position as the company’s CEO after being elected as an MP, but he continued to share in the company’s profits as a partner.

At the age of 26, Rees-Mogg joined politics by being chosen as the “Conservative Party” candidate for Central Fife, a historically “Labour Party” seat in Scotland. The working-class electorate rejected him because of his upper-class upbringing. He disagreed with David Cameron’s position, the former head of the “Conservative Party,” who favored increasing the proportion of racial and ethnic minorities in the party.

From 2005 to 2008, he presided over the “Cities of London and Westminster Conservative Association.” In London, he served as one of the directors of the “Hospital of St. John and St. Elizabeth,” where he was forced to retire after disagreements over the hospital’s adoption of a stricter rule outlawing abortion and gender reassignment operations.

In the general elections of 2010, Jacob Rees-Mogg received a majority of 4,914 votes to be elected as the MP for the North East Somerset constituency. One of the “Conservative Party’s most rebellious MPs” was how he was described. In 2011, he dissented from the whip on the “European Union Referendum Motion,” and in 2012, he dissented from the whip on the “House of Lords Reform Bill.”

He gained notoriety for his amusing comments and his capacity to filibuster ‘House of Commons’ procedures. In the years 2010 to 2012, he played a key role in blocking the passage of the “Daylight Saving Bill” and the “Sustainable Livestock Bill.”

In addition to the “Advisory Committee on Works of Art,” the “European Scrutiny Committee,” the “Joint Committee on the Palace of Westminster,” the “Procedure Committee,” the “Treasury Select Committee,” and the “Exiting the European Union Select Committee,” he was a member of a number of “Select Committees.”

Rees-Mogg backed Boris Johnson and Andrea Leadsom when the “Conservatives” had to choose their new leader after Cameron resigned in the wake of the referendum results. He soon pledged his backing to Theresa May. Additionally, there have been rumors concerning his attempt to lead the “Conservative Party.”

In January 2018, he was chosen to lead the “European Research Group.” This improved his standing within the “Conservative Party” and fuelled more rumors that he was attempting to seize control of the organization. Even though he has openly opposed Theresa May, he has been certain that he has no desire to be the party’s leader.

He is a fervent monarchist and a member of the “Cornerstone Group.” He is referred to as a right-wing populist and has faced racial accusations. But it has enabled him to win many supporters within the “Conservative Party.”
He is outspoken in his belief that the “European Union” poses a threat to British sovereignty and was a key player in the “Brexit” movement, which called for Britain to leave the “European Union.”

He favors public schools, the esteemed universities of “Oxford” and “Cambridge,” and advocates for academy-based education, which runs against the beliefs of the “Conservative Party.” He has been charged with elitism and snobbery by many.

Although he favors a free market, he thinks that when necessary, government involvement is necessary to guide the system. He believes that efforts to stop climate change shouldn’t impede the development of new technology and supports its use.

He opposes the use of British resources in the fight in Syria and other trouble spots and blames the growth in terrorism on attempts to overthrow Assad. He thinks that the economy of Britain is being harmed by the nation’s foreign aid policies.

He supports stronger immigration regulations and opposes the admittance of low-skilled immigrants into the UK. He does, however, defend the rights of foreigners who reside in the UK as members of the “European Union.”

Recognition & Achievements

In November 2017, he received the “Conservative People’s Choice MP of the Year” honor.
For his speech during the discussion on the “European Union Bill,” he was nominated for the “Conservative MP Speech Award.”
