Career of Jay Gilbert

J Hype began beatboxing and singing very early in his life after being inspired by modern rappers. Before he went to the “Boy Band” auditions, he participated in a lot of regional contests and open mic nights. In some of those contests and events, he even came out on top.

He then participated in an audition for the June 22, 2017, debut of the program “Boy Band.” The plot is straightforward: a number of young male vocalists compete to join a brand-new five-piece boy band. The chance to sign a recording deal with Hollywood Records will be given to the five winners. Additionally, they would play the group’s lead single during the show’s climax. The show’s remarkable panel of judges (architects), which included Timbaland, the Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter, and the Spice Girls’ Emma Bunton, was hosted by British singer and actress Rita Ora.

J Hype performed on the first show along with 29 other competitors. Along with fellow competitors Sergio Calderon, Devin Hayes, Drew Ramos, Cameron Armstrong, and Marcus Pendleton, he was placed in the group “Uplift” in the first episode. They sang “That’s What I Like” by Bruno Mars. Although he placed in the bottom three as a result of his performance, Cameron Armstrong was the one who was eliminated in that episode.

On the fourth episode, J Hype made a comeback as a member of the band Element. Element, made up of Devin Hayes, Andrew Bloom, Jaden Gray, Miles Wesley, and J Hype, performed “Don’t Let Me Down” by The Chainsmokers (ft. Daya). He was a member of the Maxed group in the next episode. The ensemble also included Cam Jackson, Devin Hayes, Drew Ramos, and Sergio Calderon, and they sang “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” by Frankie Valli. J Hype was in the bottom three once more, but he was able to avoid elimination.

He was added to the group Leveled together with Andrew Bloom, Cam Jackson, and Michael Conor in the sixth episode of the season. They performed “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa (ft. Charlie Puth).

After performing Nick Jonas’ “Jealous” with Marcus Pendleton, Mikey Jimenez, and Sergio Calderon as a member of the group New Wave, J Hype was finally eliminated in the following episode. He released his debut single, “Nice to Meet You,” in January 2018 after departing the competition.
