James Douglas Muir Leno was born on April 28, 1950, in New Rochelle, New York to Catherine, a housewife, and Angelo, an insurance agent.

His mother emigrated to the United States from Scotland when she was 11 years old, while his father was born in New York to Italian immigrants from Flumeri.
He graduated from Andover High School and Emerson College with a bachelor’s degree in speech therapy.

Leno and the scriptwriters found a loophole in the order to allow others on the show to perform the gags. These engagements were contested in court, but Leno and the production staff ultimately prevailed.
