Early Life & Childhood of John Green
On August 24, 1977, John Michael Green was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to parents Mike and Sydney Green. His family first relocated to Birmingham, Alabama, then to Orlando, Florida, shortly after he was born. The man is William Henry Hank Green II, his younger brother.
He went to Indian Springs School in Alabama and Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando. Green earned a double major in religious studies and English from Kenyon College in 2000.
Following his graduation, he spent several months serving as a student chaplain at Columbus, Ohio’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Despite his enrollment, he never attended the University of Chicago Divinity School.
His experiences working in a hospital and seeing children with life-threatening illnesses changed his career goal from becoming a priest to becoming an author. He eventually authored the book “The Fault in Our Stars” based on these events.
The career of John Green
John Green started as a production editor and publishing assistant for the Chicago book review publication Booklist. In addition to writing book reviews, he produced audio pieces for NPR’s All Things Considered and the public radio station in Chicago. He began writing the book “Looking for Alaska” at this time.
He published his debut book, “Looking for Alaska,” with Dutton Children’s Books in 2005. It was about adolescent romance, motivated by his experiences at Indian Springs High School. The film rights were bought by Paramount in 2005, however, no film was produced even after that period. Over time, the book’s sales increased, and in 2012, it made it to the children’s paperback section of The New York Times Best Seller list.
In 2006, he published “A Abundance of Katherines,” his second book. It was a runner-up for the Printz Award and a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. In this young adult book, the main character Colin analyzes his romantic relationships using several intricate equations.

The book was also adapted into a movie in 2015 under the same name. Green served as the film’s executive producer. Despite the favorable reviews his novels have all received, “Paper Towns” was condemned by his admirers, and Green was forced to issue an apology for the use of the word “retarded” in the book.
The book “Will Grayson, Will Grayson,” co-written by Green and his friend David Levithan, was released by Dutton Juvenile in 2010. After making it to the New York Times children’s best-seller list, the book spent three weeks there. It is the first young adult book with an LGBT subject to appear on that list.
His sixth book, “The Fault in Our Stars,” was published in 2012 and reached the top of the children’s book section of the New York Times Best Seller list. His experiences in a hospital, where he saw the suffering of kids with serious illnesses, served as inspiration for the novel. The narrative centers on a sixteen-year-old girl battling cancer. In 2014, a movie based on it was released.
After receiving funding from Google in 2012, the Green brothers’ Crash Course channel underwent a makeover and became Crash Course Kids. It covered a wide range of topics, including mythology, physics, literature, and film history. It received 11 million views and 158k subscribers as of July 2017.
