Childhood and Adolescence

Krystal was born on October 24, 1994, in San Francisco, California, to parents who moved from South Korea in the 1980s. Her father is a lawyer who used to be a boxer, and her mother was a gymnast. Jessica Jung, her older sister, is a well-known singer-songwriter. In the year 2000, she traveled to South Korea with her family. Her travel to the land where her parents were born was her first. During their visit, a member of S.M. Entertainment spotted Krystal and her sister Jessica at a shopping mall and asked them to appear in Shinhwa’s ‘Wedding March’ music video.

The girls’ parents were later approached by a talent agency with an offer to provide them with singing and dancing classes, with the hope of one day pursuing a career in the music industry. Krystal’s father and mother, on the other hand, only took a portion of the offer. While Jessica was allowed to join the agency, they decided that Krystal was too young. Jessica later became a member of the Girl’s Generation K-pop group. Since then, the Jung sisters have worked on numerous occasions.

Krystal began her career in the entertainment industry by appearing in television commercials, including a Lotte commercial with actress Han Ga-in. Her parents ultimately agreed to let her start training with S.M. Entertainment when she was seven years old. The family relocated permanently to South Korea in the same year, and she enrolled at the Korea Kent Foreign School. She went on to Hanlim Performing Arts High School, where she received her diploma on February 7, 2013. She was given a prize for her academic performance at Hanlim.
