LA Capone was an American rapper who rose to prominence after collaborating with Lil Durk, a well-known hip-hop performer. Many of Capone’s music videos went viral on social media, turning him into an online sensation. He was a part of Lil Durk’s collective ‘Only the Family,’ as well as a member of ‘Black Disciples.’ Capone, like many other Chicago artists, was a fan of ‘Drill-music,’ a Hip Hop subgenre. On September 26, 2013, LA Capone was walking down an alley after recording a tune near ‘Stony Island Avenue’ in Chicago when an unknown assailant opened fire on him. One of the rounds grazed Capone’s thigh and traveled all the way to his lower back. LA Capone’s death was verified two hours later by his close friend and fellow rapper Lil Durk, who wrote ‘RIP Lil Bro’ on his official Twitter page. Following his death, fellow rappers and friends issued a mixtape called ‘King LA,’ which was dedicated to him.
Youth and Adolescence
On September 18, 1996, in Chicago, Illinois, Leonard Anderson was christened as LA Capone. He lived his childhood with his mother, Dedra Morris after his parents divorced when he was very young. He became interested in rap music at an early age and began listening to Drill music.
Drill music, also known as ‘drill,’ began in Chicago and is about the day-to-day lives of gang members. The drill can fascinate young people because the songs are frequently about drugs and violence. Young Al Capone was also influenced by the gangster culture.
He met ‘Lil Durk’ when he was 12 years old and ultimately joined the infamous ‘Black Disciples gang, which included rappers such as Chief Keef and Lil Durk. Leonard Anderson quickly adopted the stage moniker ‘LA Capone’ and began rapping alongside artists such as RondoNumbaNine.
LA Capone’s Career
In 2011, Lil Durk created the collective ‘Only the Family,’ which included LA Capone. LA Capone rose to prominence after starring in music videos with artists such as RondoNumbaNine. Though LA Capone did not have the chance to release his own mixtape while alive, his fellow rappers and friends released a mixtape titled ‘King LA’ after his death. The mixtape includes some of Capone’s most famous songs, including “Round Here,” “Play for Keeps,” “So Loud,” and “The Gat.”
LA Capone was walking down an alley around 6 p.m. on September 26, 2013, after recording a tune at a studio near ‘Stony Island Avenue’ in Chicago. He was there with a buddy. An unknown assailant opened fire on him as he was about to get into his vehicle. One of the rounds struck Capone in the thigh and penetrated all the way to his lower back.
Capone was taken to ‘Northwestern Memorial Hospital,’ where he died at 8:30 p.m. due to blood loss. At the time of his death, LA Capone was only 17 years old. Because Capone was a member of the gang ‘600,’ he had many enemies from competing gangs such as ‘Gangster Disciples and ‘051 Young Money.’ As a result, many people assumed that someone from one of his rival gangs was responsible for his murder.
Police confirmed in August 2014 that three gang members had been arrested in relation to LA Capone’s murder. Michael Mays, Sakhee Hardy-Johnson, and Meiko Buchanan were accused of the murder of LA Capone. While Michael Mays and Sakhee Hardy-Johnson were members of the gang ‘051 Young Money,’ Meiko Buchanan was subsequently revealed to be a car driver. His rivalry with ‘051 Young Money’ was said to be the motivation for his assassination.
