Early Childhood & Life
On May 1, 1964, Lady Sarah Frances Elizabeth Armstrong-Jones gave birth to Lady Sarah Frances Elizabeth Chatto at Kensington Palace in London. She is the youngest grandchild of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and a niece of Queen Elizabeth II through her mother, Princess Margaret. David Armstrong-Jones, her only sibling, succeeded their deceased father as the new Earl of Snowdon. Through her father, she also has three half-siblings. She has an older half-sister named Polly, who was created by her father and Camilla Fry. Lady Frances von Hofmannsthal, whose mother is Lucy Lindsay-Hogg, is her younger half-sister. Jasper Cable-Alexander, a younger half-brother, was born to journalist Melanie Cable-Alexander.
On July 13, 1964, she was christened in the personal chapel of Buckingham Palace. Her parents named Jane Stevens, the wife of Jocelyn Stevens and one of Princess Margaret’s ladies-in-waiting, Prudence, Lady Penn (née Stewart-Wilson), and Marigold Bridgeman as her godmothers in addition to David Fane, 15th Earl of Westmorland, and family friend Antony Barton.
Verona Sumner, their nanny, raised Lady Sarah and her brother David mostly in Apartment 1a of Kensington Palace. That doesn’t negate the fact that their parents were involved in their upbringing, though. In terms of today’s standards, they were essentially hands-on. In addition to teaching his kids how to create things and be creative, Antony took a special interest in fostering their artistic instincts. Depending on which parent they were seeing that week, they would spend every weekend at either Nymans or Royal Lodge. The royal estates of Sandringham and Balmoral were where they spent their vacations, and Lady Sarah painted many of her landscapes there.
She attended Bedales School in Petersfield, England, then transferred to the Camberwell School of Art after earning one A level in art. After graduating from there, she took a two-year break from her studies and traveled to India with her father. To capture pictures for the making of “A Passage to India,” Antony had been engaged. She was given a position as an intern in the wardrobe department by John Knatchbull, 7th Baron Brabourne, who was producing the movie.
Since they were both young children, she has been close to her cousin Prince Charles. Sarah was chosen by Diana and Charles to be one of Prince Harry’s godmothers after she served as one of Princess Diana’s bridesmaids at their wedding. Additionally, she is Lady Louise Windsor and Lady Rose Gilman’s godmother.
Family & Marriage
During a trip to India in the 1980s, Lady Sarah met the actor and artist Daniel Chatto. He was there as a member of the “Heat and Dust” film team, a romantic drama. Finally, Chatto presented her with a “vintage cluster ring” and proposed to her. The ceremony was held at St. Stephen’s, Walbrook in the City of London on July 14, 1994. The service, which was officiated by Reverend Chad Varah, was attended by roughly 200 people, including members of the royal family. Arthur and Samuel, the couple’s two sons, were born.
She continued attending Middlesex Polytechnic after her trip to India because she still felt the need to further her studies. In 1992, Middlesex Polytechnic changed its name to Middlesex University.
