NF (Nathan John Feuerstein) is a rapper, singer, and songwriter from the United States. He is renowned for his captivating sounds and relatable lyrics. He was born and raised in Michigan, a challenging place to grow up. He found solace in both listening to and making music, and via his songs, he was able to express the conflict and rage inside of him. Curiously, though, his lyrics are devoid of any derogatory language, criminal activity, or hopelessness. His sincere feelings and honest words instantly evoke an emotional response in his listeners, which has helped him amass a sizable following. Both “Christian Hip-Hop” and “Mainstream Hip-Hop” have been topped by him. NF has a deal with the biggest ‘Christian Music’ label in the US (Capitol CMG), making him a ‘Christian rapper,’ however he prefers to refer to himself as ‘an artist who makes music for anyone.’ His 2014 EP, ‘NF,’ which was released, was the key to his breakout success. In the three years that followed, he released three studio albums: “Mansion,” “Therapy Session,” and “Perception.” His song “Let You Down” from “Perception” has triple platinum certification. His video “Real” has received 18 million views on “YouTube,” making it his most popular.
Early Childhood & Life
On March 30, 1991, Nathan John Feuerstein was born in Gladwin, Michigan. He was a little child when his parents split up. He and his two sisters shared a home with their mother, an opioid addict. His father removed the three kids after one of his mother’s boyfriends violently attacked him and one of his sisters. The kids didn’t see their mother a lot because of the tense relationships. NF cut off contact with his mother throughout his high school years because he found it awkward when the judge mandated that a social worker should listen in on their talk.
His mother passed away from a heroin overdose in 2009. Later, on the album “Therapy Session,” he composed the heartbreaking song “How Could You Leave Us,” which describes the emotional uncertainty of a young child who couldn’t understand why his mother liked the pills more than him. Numerous listeners admitted to sobbing after hearing this song.
He graduated in 2009 from the “Gladwin High School.” He played basketball for the school team.
He listened to Eminem’s songs a lot as a kid. NF acknowledges that Eminem’s music served as a significant inspiration. At the age of 12, he started writing and rapping. He also started recording songs on a Karaoke machine, using one microphone to capture his raps and the other for the instrumentals. He performed with the Connection Church at the “Fine Arts Festival” in Canton, Michigan. He came in second in a national rap competition sponsored by the “Fine Arts Festival” in 2008, and in Michigan, he took first in 2009.
He worked as an electrician to make a living throughout his hard times.
Career of NF (Nathan John Feuerstein)
In 2010, he began a career in music. Under his birth name, he independently released his first album, “Moments.” After his CD was heard, the recording company “Xist Music” got in touch with him, and in 2012 he obtained a recording contract. He had already adopted the stage moniker “NF” by this point. His extended play, ‘NF,’ was announced by the record label, but it was never made available because of a disagreement. Later on, though, NF did record a song for the “Xist Music” compilation CD.
The following two years saw him sign with no label at all. He collaborated with the nearby producer Tommy Profitt to record the song “Wake up.” On November 4, 2013, his single, “Beautiful Addiction,” was released under his own name.
He joined “Capitol CMG” and published his extended play, “NF,” in 2014. This became popular, reaching positions 12 on Billboard’s Christian Albums, 4, on the Top Gospel Albums, and 15, respectively. In numerous reviews, the EP scored three and a half stars or more.
On March 31, 2015, NF released his debut studio album, “Mansion,” under “Capitol CMG.” It featured the songs “Wake Up,” “Mansion” with Fleurie, and “I’ll Keep On” with Jeremiah Carlson, and peaked at number 62 on the Billboard 200.
He has contributed to the songs of various musicians, such as Flame’s “Start Over,” Futuristic’s “Epiphany,” and TobyMac’s “Till the Day I Die.” The song “Intro” by NF is used in the American football video game “Madden NFL 16” (based on the National Football League).
His upcoming album’s lead songs, “I Just Wanna Know” and “Real,” were made available on April 8 and April 22, 2016, respectively. With more than 18 million views on “YouTube,” the song “Real” became a big hit. These songs were included in his second album, “Therapy Session,” which was published on April 22, 2016. It peaked at number one on the Rap Album Chart and reached number 12 on the Billboard 200.
He released ‘Warm Up,’ a non-album single, on September 8, 2016. In the summer of 2017, he released the singles “Outro” and “Green Light,” and both were eventually featured in his third album, “Perception.”
Perception, NF’s third studio album, debuted at number one on the “Billboard 200” and became his first album to reach the top of the charts when it was released in October 2017. “Let You Down,” the third single from this album, peaked at number one on both the mainstream “Top 40” and “Christian Song Charts.” It was triple platinum-certified.
It is fairly unusual for a musician to top the charts without any hit single and with minimal press or media publicity, and he never had a song on the “Hot 100” list. NF has been compared to another well-known rapper from Michigan, Eminem, because of the rage and wrath that come through in his music. He made his stage debut in London in November 2017 following the release of his third album and had a lengthy tour scheduled for the middle of 2018.
Recognition & Achievements
He won the 2016 Dove Award for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year with his second album, “Therapy Session.” He received the ‘Dove Award for Rap/Hip-Hop Recorded Song of the Year’ in 2017 for his song, ‘Oh Lord!’ The Dove Award for Rap/Hip-Hop Recorded Song of the Year had nominated his song, “I Just Wanna Know.”
