Reinhold Niebuhr was a famous American theologian and intellectual who was admired by many people. Niebuhr was made a minister by the German Evangelical Synod of North America. For the next 13 years, he worked as a pastor for the middle class. When he moved to New York, he started working at Union Theological Seminary, where he taught Christian ethics and was also the dean. His connection to the seminary was important and stayed with him as long as he lived. As a philosopher and smart person, he wasn’t making or defending strict sets of beliefs. But he tried to use modern Christian models to improve politics and society as a whole. Some of his theological ideas have been called “Christian realism,” and most of his work was focused on peace and trying to promote the idea of love in a world that is always at war. Early years and childhood
Niebuhr was born in Wright City, Missouri, on June 21, 1892. His parents, Gustav and Lydia Niebuhr came to the United States from Germany. His father, a German Evangelical pastor, paved the way in theology for him and his siblings.
His brother, H. Richard Niebuhr was a theologian who studied morality, and his sister, Hulda Niebuhr, taught religion in Chicago.
Niebuhr’s first time in a church was when he was a pastor at St. John’s Church in Illinois. He and his family had just moved there. After his father died in 1913, he was put in charge of the church for a short time.
In 1910, he got his degree from Elmhurst College in Illinois. He then went to Webster Groves, Missouri, to study at Eden Theological Seminary.
He got his Bachelor of Divinity from Yale Divinity School in 1914. He got his Master of Arts from the same school the following year.
Reinhold Niebuhr’s Career
After Niebuhr was ordained as a pastor in 1915, the German Evangelical mission board sent him to Detroit. After he got there, the number of people in the congregation grew a lot, which showed that he could connect with people outside of the German-American community.
During World War I in 1917, Niebuhr encouraged German Americans to be loyal to the United States. His calls to action were often printed in National magazines, which made him very popular.
During the war, he worked as the Executive Secretary of the War Welfare Commission and also kept his job as a pastor in Detroit.
He had a lot of bad things to say about Henry Ford and the car business. He said that they were to blame for how bad things were for car workers.
He moved to New York in 1928 and became a committed Marxist. He worked as a Professor of Practical Theology at Union Theological Seminary for the rest of his career until 1960, when he finally retired.
He became an important and well-known leader of the Socialist Party of America’s radical group. In 1941, he helped start a group called the Union for Democratic Action. For the next six years, he led that group as its president.
The group pushed hard for an internationalist, military-interventionist foreign policy and a liberal, pro-union domestic policy. Union for Democratic Action changed its name to Americans for Democratic Action in 1947.
He wrote the “Serenity Prayer,” which he often quoted in public speeches. When he used it in a sermon in 1943, it was the first time the prayer was written down and shared with the public.
He was in charge of the magazine “Christianity and Crisis” from 1941 to 1966. He wrote books like “Leaves from the Notebook of a Tamed Cynic” and “Moral Man and Immoral Society” over the course of his career.
In 1952, he wrote “The Irony of American History,” in which he explained what the United States’ history means.
Works of note
His most famous books were “Moral Man and Immoral Society” and “The Nature and Destiny of Man.” Politicians and leaders all over the world still read and learn from these books.
He wrote the very well-known Serenity Prayer, which is used by Alcoholics Anonymous and other twelve-step programs. In modern times, the most common version of the original prayer is one that has been changed.

Niebuhr married Ursula Keppel-Compton in 1931. She was a member of the Church and went to Oxford University to study theology and history.
