Richmond Lockwood Sexson is a former baseball player from the United States. Throughout his eleven-year career, he had played for five teams. He is recognized as one of the tallest position players in history. Born in Portland, Oregon, he showed early proficiency in baseball, basketball, and football. He also set the school record for most runs batted in and home runs. He was picked by the Cleveland Indians in the 24th round of the amateur baseball draft when he was 19 years old. He was later dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers. Approximately three years before being moved to the Arizona Diamondbacks, he played for the team. After two years with them, he signed a four-year, $50 million contract with the Seattle Mariners. After being released by the Seattle Mariners, he began playing baseball with the New York Yankees. However, he was released after a brief detention.

Richie Sexson’s Career

In 1993, at the age of nineteen, the Cleveland Indians selected Richie Sexson in the amateur baseball draft. In the subsequent years, he proved to be an exceptionally effective player. 1999 was a breakthrough year for him, as he hit 31 home runs and drove 116 runs in a total of 134 games.

He was dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2000. In the next season, he hit 45 home runs, tying the 1979 Brewers’ record set by Gorman Thomas. Even though he also broke another record with 178 strikeouts, he was eclipsed the following season by Jose Hernandez.

In 2002, he represented the team at the MLB All-Star Game. It took place in Milwaukee. The following season, he participated in all 162 games and once again hit 45 home runs. In 2007, Prince Fielder broke his record by hitting fifty home runs.

Sexson was dealt to the Arizona Diamondbacks in December 2003. Due to a reverse subluxation of his left shoulder, he was out for the majority of the season, rendering this transaction disadvantageous for the organization.

Prior to the 2005 season, Richie Sexson signed a four-year, $50 million deal with the Seattle Mariners. His performance throughout the season was outstanding. He recorded 39 home runs and 121 RBI. However, during the 2007 season, he hit only 21 home runs and drove in 63 runs. The squad released him in July of 2008.

In July 2008, Sexson signed with the New York Yankees. Although he performed well on his debut, he did not remain with the team for long. After his release on August 24th, he proclaimed his retirement.

He is married to Kerry Sexson, and the couple has two children: Preston and Ayla. He has been the baseball coach at Summit High School in Bend, Oregon, since 2014.
