Alleged Headbanking Abuse

At the outset, Stalvey self-identified as a lesbian. In 2014, at the age of 14, he disclosed his transgender identity to his parents. Stalvey claims that his mother first became aware of his gender identity when he attended his eighth-grade commencement in the company of formal attire, including a tie, button-down shirt, and dress trousers. His mother was present and was taken aback by the fact that he had exited the residence dressed in a gown. She subsequently attempted to strike him in the parking lot after escorting him there.

Stalvey has claimed that ever since he came out as a lesbian, his mother has subjected him to mental and verbal abuse. After disclosing his gender identity to his parents, the situation further intensified. His parents allegedly subjected him to conversion therapy and began to abuse him physically and mentally. Child protective services were notified by James Weldon Johnson Middle School, where he was enrolled in 2015, regarding allegations of domestic abuse levied against his father. Eventually, however, these charges were dismissed.

A live-streamed video he uploaded in January 2016 showed his mother attempting to remove the male clothing he was wearing and pinning him to the settee. Stalvey barked ceaselessly, but his mother ascribed the situation to the “stupid binders” despite his repeated cries for assistance. His father, who had observed the situation, attempted to pacify them both at one point but left when Stalvey’s mother refused to listen. He refused to give her the shears so she could sever Stalvey’s clothing despite her repeated requests. During the incident, Stalvey’s sister was also present in the residence. Stalvey declared in a YouTube video reliving the incident that the sight of his sister sobbing as their mother subjected him to maltreatment was an image that would live indelibly in his mind.

Live viewing of the video was conducted by thousands of individuals. Nick and Heidi Dennis were members of the audience. Kyler, a transgender acquaintance of Stalvey’s from school, is also represented by these parents. The Dennis family reported Stalvey’s mother to the authorities, which led to her subsequent apprehension. Stalvey, on the other hand, was taken from his parents’ residence and given permission to reside with the Dennis family. A judge ruled in April that his mother’s offenses would be dismissed in exchange for therapeutic training, community service, and the payment of a fine.

Stalvey stated that the verdict horrified him to the point where he continued to experience nightmares concerning his mother. Furthermore, as his legal guardian, he feared that she would compel him to return to their residence.
Stalvey initiated legal proceedings in early 2016 in an effort to be granted permission to reside with the Dennis family. His schoolmates backed him and utilized the hashtag #RiseForRyan to initiate an online social movement.
