Shin Min-a was born on April 5, 1984, in Seongnam, South Korea. Her ancestors are from the South Korean province of Gyeonggi. Her parents, an older brother, and an older sister make up her family. Yang Min A was her given name when she was born.
She graduated from Hyosung High School and continued her education at Dongguk University.

Shin Min-a went on a photo shoot with some of her pals when she was in middle school. She emailed the images to Kiki Magazine. She was chosen as a model for the publication’s youth magazine. In 1998, she began working for them as a model.
She appeared in a number of sponsorships, which helped her establish a successful modeling career. She rose to prominence after starring alongside Hyun Bin and Ryoo Seung Boom in LG’s multi-episode ‘Summer Days’ in 2008.
