Sudan Gurung (born 18 July 1987) is a Nepalese politician and philanthropist who has served as the 23rd minister of home affairs of Nepal since March 2026. He is the founder and coordinator of the non-governmental organisation Hami Nepal. Gurung rose to prominence as a leader of the Gen Z movement following the 2025 Nepalese Gen Z protests. He was a key participant in negotiations with the President and Chief of the Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel, which resulted in the appointment of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim prime minister and the dissolution of parliament to allow for early elections. On 14 September 2025, Gurung spearheaded protests against the Karki administration, calling for her resignation after alleging she had expanded her cabinet without proper consultation. His political platform focuses on anti-corruption, secularism, systemic reform, and the empowerment of the youth. Gurung identifies as non-religious, advocating for a philosophical perspective he calls the “religion of humanity.” He was elected to parliament representing the Gorkha 1 constituency in the 2026 Nepalese general election as a member of the Rastriya Swatantra Party.
Early life and education
Sudan Gurung was born on 18 July 1987 in Gorkha, Nepal, and was raised by his grandparents in Chitwan. Following his SLC examinations, he enrolled in A-Levels but did not complete the program. Before his involvement in philanthropy and political activism, Gurung worked as a DJ and an event manager.
Initial activism of Sudan Gurung
Gurung’s transition into activism was sparked by the 2015 Nepal earthquake, specifically following the death of a child in his arms during the disaster. In the immediate aftermath, he utilized social media to coordinate a volunteer group of 1,000 people at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu. This group managed the distribution of aid to rural regions while simultaneously criticizing the government, alleging that state corruption was hindering relief efforts.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gurung established Hami Nepal as a community-driven emergency response initiative. Formally registered that same year, the organization evolved into a non-partisan, youth-led platform dedicated to civic engagement and direct humanitarian relief.
The NGO has collaborated with several prominent figures, including ophthalmologist Dr. Sanduk Ruit and Miss Universe Nepal 2018 Manita Devkota, the latter serving as a goodwill ambassador. Hami Nepal’s work has extended to international disaster relief, such as the 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquakes, and domestic responses like the 2021 Nepal floods. The organization has received multiple awards for its community service and pandemic response.

Gurung first emerged as a protest leader in early 2025 at the B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, where he campaigned for institutional transparency. He later became a central figure during the 2025 Nepalese Gen-Z protests. He played a key role in negotiations with Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, which facilitated the appointment of Sushila Karki as interim prime minister and the dissolution of parliament.
In late 2025, Gurung shifted toward an electoral strategy, announcing he would run in the 2026 elections with a political party rather than as an independent. Throughout the interim period, he remained a vocal critic of the government; he led protests against Karki in September 2025 over cabinet appointments and organized further demonstrations in November 2025 against political nepotism.
On 18 January 2026, Gurung officially joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party. He contested the Gorkha 1 constituency, winning the seat with 29,896 votes. On 27 March 2026, he was appointed Minister of Home Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Balen Shah.
