In South Carolina between 2003 and 2016, Todd Kohlhepp, a prominent American serial killer, was found guilty of killing seven people. Todd had a rough childhood that perverted his mind and made him become a brutal killer. Todd was born in Florida and raised in South Carolina and Georgia. His criminal career started when he was 15 and committed a rape. A 14-year-old girl was taken hostage by him, bound, and transported to his house. He sexually assaulted her and made a death threat if she told anyone about the crime. After being found guilty, he was given a 15-year prison sentence. When he was released from jail in 2001, it was thought that the education he had obtained while incarcerated had helped him modify some of his habits and become a better person. But the authorities couldn’t be more mistaken. Four individuals were slain by him in November 2006. Ten years later, he focused on two couples. Kala Brown, one of his victims, was saved by the police in some way. After being arrested, Todd agreed to the accusations made against him. He received seven consecutive life sentences in 2017, which was the year. He nearly received the death penalty.

Early Childhood & Life

Regina and William Sampsell welcomed Todd Kohlhepp into the world on March 7, 1971, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Todd’s parents split up when he was still a newborn due to their tumultuous marriage. After that, Todd lost touch with his biological father for a long period of time. When Todd was three years old, his mother remarried, and his stepfather legally adopted him in 1976.

Todd was frequently assaulted since he never really got along with his stepfather. His mother ended up divorcing and remarrying the same man twice because she was unable to accept this. Todd’s only desire, though, was to live with his biological father.

Todd made trouble in nursery school due to issues at home. He had considerable emotional and mental instability when he was young. In rage-fueled outbursts, he was violent toward other kids and vandalized school property. It was discovered that he was “explosive” and already preoccupied with sexual thoughts and wants when he was 9 years old and admitted to a psychiatric facility.

He treated animals inhumanely to an extreme. He allegedly once used a rifle to track down a dog and kill a goldfish. Even before entering his adolescent years, he was difficult to govern and control. His mother ultimately made the choice to send him to his biological father. His father had numerous girlfriends and a gun obsession. Todd liked him at first, but his methods and tactics quickly made him angry. Todd begged his mother to take him home, but it’s claimed that she came up with justifications to keep him with his biological father longer.

Todd was regarded as an intelligent student who performed far above average.

The onset of the criminal life

Todd got his start in crime young. When he made the decision to abduct and rape a girl who was a year younger than him in 1986, he was still a teen. The victim was a Tempe resident who was 14 years old. She was severely raped by Todd after he abducted her from her home, bound her with a rope, and took her to his house. He also threatened to kill her horribly if she revealed the details of her trauma, but the rape was somehow reported.

When Todd was detained by the police and questioned, he claimed that he had committed the crime voluntarily. His father was harsh and frequently absent, even when Todd lived with him. This was his method of rebelling against him. His mother supported him and sent a letter to the probation officer pleading with him to be kind to Todd because he was aware of what he had done and felt bad about it.
The sexual assault charge was withdrawn, and Todd received a prison term for kidnapping instead. He was jailed for 15 years and required to register as a sex offender. He was found to have “excellent” intelligence and a severely “antisocial” mentality, according to a psychological examination conducted in prison in 1987.

While incarcerated, he completed a computer science degree program for inmates. When he was released from prison in 2001, this was meant to give him a solid career, straighten his twisted sensibility, and help him become a decent person.

Career of Todd Kohlhepp

After being freed from prison in 2001, he promptly relocated to Spartanburg. He enrolled in “University of South Carolina Upstate” in 2004. Todd was a bright student, according to one of his professors, and she didn’t notice any violent tendencies or anything noteworthy in him.
One of Todd’s closest friends from his time in college, Cherry Laurens, reportedly said that Todd seemed like a kind person and that she found it hard to believe he could ever do the horrifying atrocities he was subsequently found guilty of.

He earned his real estate agent certification in 2006. He had previously held a position as a graphic designer. He purchased a residence close to Moore, and thanks to his above-average intelligence and keen perception, he was able to start a successful real estate company.

Many of Todd’s old friends say that he was an extremely diligent person. They assert that despite the fact that he had a creepy quality, they had not given it enough thought and did not consider it to be significant enough for them to abandon their individual associations with Todd.

Crimes of Todd Kohlhepp

Police discovered Kala Brown, a young woman, on Todd’s property on November 3, 2016. Kala was discovered alive, “chained like a dog.” Todd was picked up right away. A few days later, Todd’s land saw the discovery of Kala’s boyfriend’s body in a shallow grave. He had taken many gunshot wounds.

After being questioned by the police on November 5, Todd showed them where two other remains had been discovered. Johnny Coxie and Meagan McGraw-Coxie, who were both reported missing in December 2015, were the victims. Both the couple and Kala’s boyfriend had sustained several gunshot wounds.

However, Todd’s information regarding the spate of killings that year was the most startling. Four persons were shot and killed on November 6, 2003, in a motorcycle store in Chesnee. The four people who were shot many times were all store employees.
Just four hours after being taken into custody, Todd allegedly confessed to the crimes in front of his mother and stepfather.

Conviction after trial

When Todd Kohlhepp stated that he had killed a number of more persons who had not yet been located by the police in late 2016, the police began investigating his possible connections to additional homicides. Todd was accused of seven murders, two kidnappings, and three counts of having murderous weapons in his possession. He was almost certain to get the death penalty, but a guilty plea prevented it.
He was sentenced to seven consecutive life terms of imprisonment on May 26, 2017, making it clear that he would not be eligible for parole and would likely serve his whole life behind bars.
