Ugly God is the stage name of American rapper, songwriter, and record producer Royce Davison. He is best known for his 2016 SoundCloud single “Water,” which went viral. His parents did not approve of him using the stage moniker Pussy Bacon, as is evident. Therefore, he chose to alter it to Ugly God. According to him, the concept of an unattractive God came to mind because he considered himself to be unattractive. His debut single, “I Beat My Meat,” sparked controversy due to its explicit language. It had to be removed because the principal of the school where he studied disapproved of it. He re-posted it at a later time, but the outcome was the same. Midway through 2017, he was designated as one of ten ‘2017 Freshman Class members by the American hip-hop magazine XXL. His ‘Freshman Freestyle’ performance alongside XXXTentacion, Playboi Carti, and MadeinTYO was viewed more than 20 million times within a year.
Ugly’s Career
As a young child, Ugly God became interested in music and began rapping while still in school. Initially, he went by the alias “Pussy Bacon.” However, the offensive nature of the name landed him in hot water with his parents and school principal. Consequently, he changed the name to ‘Ugly God’; he subsequently confirmed that he made up the moniker on the spot. His stage moniker reflects his own self-perception, as he has always considered himself to be ugly.
The principal of his school requested that he remove his first single, “I Beat My Meat,” from the internet after he had uploaded it. He removed it only to publish it again later. Again, he was compelled to take it down. However, the subsequent controversy increased the single’s popularity. Later, as a freshman at the University of South Mississippi, he re-uploaded the recording, which has not been removed since.
