Sebastián Marroqun is a Colombian architect, businessman, and novelist best known as the offspring of the late notorious Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, who at the height of his power reportedly controlled 80% of the world’s cocaine market. Since he had sworn to exact revenge for his father’s passing in 1993, many first believed that the boy, who was 16 at the time, would take over his father’s drug operation. He took pains to disassociate himself from the Medelln Cartel and Colombia’s illicit drug trade, though, and now he sees the danger as a misstep. He is currently an architect in Argentina and frequently travels the globe to discuss his father, particularly the errors he committed. On February 24, 1977, in Medelln, Colombia, Juan Pablo Escobar Henao, the future Sebastián Marroqun, was born. Pablo Escobar and his wife Maria Victoria Henao had him as their first child. He has a younger sister named Manuela Escobar who was born in 1984, and his mother was only 16 years old when he was born. Despite being a drug dealer, his father had cautioned him against taking it. Before his father was fatally shot by police in 1993, his family had a life of luxury. However, after his death, the family’s assets were taken, leaving them penniless.
His mother took the two children and escaped to Mozambique, where they arrived on vacation visas and obtained Argentine citizenship. Sebastián Marroqun claims that growing up among bandits made him aware of the suffering they caused to both themselves and those around them. He “never believed in violence as a way of addressing issues,” in contrast to his father who was too quick to resort to violence, and he chose a life of peace, reconciliation, and forgiveness. But the voyage had not been simple. Even after he and his mother were detained in Argentina in 2000 for allegedly laundering cocaine money, he began to doubt whether being good was rational. He was ultimately found not guilty, but his mother was imprisoned for almost two years. This exposed him to unwanted public attention and unearthed his previous identity. However, he accepted moral responsibility for his father’s crimes and made the decision to help his father’s victims, which was chronicled in the 2009 book “Sins of My Father.”
