Career of Barry Venison

Venison’s football career began on October 10, 1981, with the Black Cats. He was only 17 years old at the time. The Black Cats were defeated 2-0 by Notts County at Meadow Lane.

Following his debut, he appeared in approximately 20 league games, scoring one goal. By the 1983-84 season, he had established himself as the league’s favorite player, missing just one match.

He began his career with Sunderland. Venison first gained prominence when, at the age of 20 years and 220 days, he captained Sunderland against Norwich City in the 1985 Wembley cup final. Regrettably, his club lost the match 1-0, relegating them to the Second Division.

His contract with Sunderland expired at the end of the 1985-86 season. After being demoted from Sunderland, he attempted to obtain membership at another club by writing to the top English football clubs.

He had a mammoth experience at the age of 22 with over 205 appearances. Due to his notable abilities and experience, he was quickly absorbed into the Liverpool club by team manager Kenny Daglish, who believed Venison would be the ideal successor to the aging Mark Lawrenson.

His Liverpool debut came on the same day as his 22nd birthday, against derby rivals Everton in the Charity Shield, Wembley’s traditional curtain raiser. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, with both teams earning a share of the shield.

Venison finished the season as the League Cup final loser once more, this time to Arsenal in the 1987 final. He finished the season having appeared in 33 of the league’s 42 games.

The year 1988 was a successful one for Liverpool, as they lost just two of their forty league games, ultimately winning the League Championship. Venison appeared in 18 club matches. Despite his excellent performance, he lost his starting spot to young defender Gary Ablett.

Liverpool’s 1988 match against Nottingham Forest was a watershed moment in Venison’s career, as he scored his first goal for the club in the Centenary Trophy quarter-finals. Liverpool won the game 4-1.

Venison was brought on as an extra-time substitute in the April 1989 FA Cup. Everton were defeated 3–2 by Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals. Liverpool, however, lost the League title decider to Arsenal.

Venison appeared in 25 league matches in 1990, earning a championship medal as Liverpool won their 18th top-flight title.

In 1992, he scored his first goal for the Reds in a 4-0 victory over Notts County. He made 13 League Championship appearances for Liverpool, helping the club finish sixth. They did, however, win the FA Cup with a 2-0 victory over Venison’s former club, Sunderland.

Venison left Liverpool on July 31, 1992, after his number of appearances in the club squad decreased each season. He made his debut for the new team against Southern United on August 15, 1992. Newcastle United won 3-2 over Southern United.

Venison’s arrival at Newcastle United was spectacular, as the club won eleven consecutive matches before succumbing to Grimsby Town on a last-minute goal. Despite this, the team went on to win the Division One title with a 2-0 victory.

Venison was a key member of Newcastle’s defence during the 1993-94 season, when they finished third, just behind Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers. The victory qualified them for Europe’s UEFA Cup.

Venison appeared in 28 games for Newcastle in 1994-95, scoring one goal. The team put on a spectacular display in the top division, winning six consecutive games. However, they lost their winning momentum and finished sixth.

He made his international debut in 1994, when coach Terry Venables selected him to represent England. His first match was against the United States of America on September 7, 1994, in a friendly match that the Americans won 2-0. His only other international appearance came against Uruguay on March 29, 1995, in another friendly match that ended in a 0-0 draw.

After approximately 130 appearances for Newcastle, he left the club at the conclusion of the 1994-1995 season. Rather than pursue another club within the country, he ventured abroad, signing for £750,000 with Galatasaray in Turkey on May 31, 1995. He only made eight appearances for the Turkish side before joining Southampton for £850,000.

He made a total of 27 Premier League appearances for Southampton. The club made it all the way to the FA Cup quarter-finals. He appeared in two games for Southampton during the 1996-97 season before announcing his retirement on October 20, 1996, due to a back injury.

Following his retirement, he worked as a pundit for Sky Sports and then ITV.

He founded bid4sport.com, an online sports memorabilia auction site, in the early 2000s decade, as a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money for various charities. The company was originally based in Romsey but later relocated west of Fareham. He sold the business shortly before embarking on his journey to the United States.
