Anna Chicherova was born in the Soviet Union’s Yerevan region on July 22, 1982. Her father was a professional high jumper, therefore she grew up in a sports-oriented home. Anna began her high jump training at the age of seven, with the help of her father. Her training sessions proceeded well until the Soviet Union fell apart, forcing her family to relocate to Belaya Klitva, a small Russian town near Rostov. Anna continued her training there under the direction of coach Alexei Bondarenko, whilst her father was forced to seek alternative employment as a railway station worker.

Anna Chicherova began her athletic career at the Russian Sports Academy when she was 16 years old. She received her training here under Alexander Fetisov’s supervision. She won the 1999 World Youth Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, with a leap of 1.89 meters under his supervision.
She finished fourth in the 2000 World Junior Championships in Santiago, Chile, with a leap of 1.85 meters. Her personal best by 2002 was 1.92 meters, only 3 centimeters higher than her jump at the 1999 World Youth Championships. During this period, she enlisted the help of Yevgeny Zagorluko as a coach, and she began training with him.
