Her family migrated to Cedar Falls, Iowa when she was two years old after her father got a teaching position at the University of Northern Iowa. Her mother also obtained employment, this time at Malcolm Price Laboratory School. She has two older siblings: Timothy, a brother, and Robin, a sister.

As a member of an educator family, her academic life was given great consideration. She graduated from Northern University High School in 1989. She then enrolled at Duke University, where she joined Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and studied drama, film, and women’s studies.
