Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters is a South African model and beauty pageant titleholder who gained international recognition after being crowned Miss Universe in November 2017. Her victory came only a few months after she won the Miss South Africa 2017 title. She became the second woman from South Africa to win the Miss Universe crown since the competition began in 1956, following Margaret Gardiner, who won the title in 1978. Rise to Stardom
While pursuing her college education, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters began working as a part-time model and was represented by agencies such as Boss Models and Vision Management Cape Town. She also developed an interest in beauty pageants during her late teenage years and spent several years competing before achieving international recognition.
In 2017, she represented the Western Cape region in the Miss South Africa competition and eventually won the prestigious title. As Miss South Africa, she became eligible to represent her country in both the Miss World and Miss Universe competitions. However, because the events were scheduled around the same time, she could participate in only one of them. She was ultimately selected to compete at Miss Universe 2017, held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Philanthropy
Demi-Leigh used her international platform to raise awareness about women’s safety and self-defense. Following a frightening personal experience, she established a self-defense initiative called Unbreakable, which focuses on empowering women by providing them with practical knowledge and skills to help protect themselves.
About a month after winning the Miss South Africa title, she was reportedly involved in a carjacking incident in Johannesburg, during which she was threatened at gunpoint. She later explained that her self-defense training helped her escape from the situation and seek assistance. The experience became one of the main inspirations behind her efforts to promote women’s empowerment and personal safety.
Family and Personal Life
Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was born on June 28, 1995, in Sedgefield, Western Cape, South Africa. Her parents, Bennie Peters and Anne-Marie Steenkamp, later divorced and remarried. She spent much of her time with her mother and stepfather in Sedgefield, while her father and stepmother lived in Potchefstroom.
Her family has played an important role in her life. Her father previously worked in the corporate sector and later entered the hospitality business. Her mother has worked as an interior designer and landscaper. Demi-Leigh has also spoken publicly about the strong influence of her family members and has said that her stepsister has been a major source of inspiration and motivation in her life.
During her school years, Demi-Leigh demonstrated leadership qualities and became the first female student at her school to serve as both head girl and hostel leader. In Grade 11, she was also elected Deputy Junior Mayor of the George City Council.
She later earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Entrepreneurship from North-West University. She is fluent in English and Afrikaans. Outside her professional life, she enjoys reading, traveling, and outdoor activities such as trail running, hiking, and road races. Relationship with Tim Tebow
Demi-Leigh first met Tim Tebow in 2018 at the Night to Shine event in South Africa, organized by his charitable foundation. She and her sister had been invited to attend the event, which provides a special prom-style experience for people with special needs.
