Childhood & Early Life

Jamie Waylett was born on July 21, 1989, in Kilburn, London, England, to Alan Waylett and Theresa Waylett, née De Freitas. He has five siblings, including two brothers, Richard and Robert, and a sister named Lauren.

When Waylett was nine years old, he was involved in a serious road accident after being struck by a car. He was rushed to the hospital, and his mother was notified of the incident. Initially, hospital staff informed her that her son had suffered broken legs. However, when she arrived, she discovered that he was unconscious. Doctors were uncertain whether he would survive and feared that he might sustain permanent brain damage even if he recovered.

Waylett spent the next three days in the intensive care unit. Although he occasionally regained consciousness, he remained incoherent during those periods. After three days, his father insisted that the medical team examine their son’s blood. A blood transfusion was administered later that day, and his condition subsequently improved. He regained consciousness the following day and eventually recovered his full mental faculties.

Involvement in the Harry Potter Franchise

In 2000, while attending Emmanuel Primary School, Waylett was selected to play Vincent Crabbe in the first Harry Potter film. His photograph was initially accepted during the general casting process. The producers reportedly considered him suitable for the role of Dudley Dursley, the son of Harry Potter’s maternal aunt. However, director Christopher Columbus ultimately chose him to portray Vincent Crabbe.

In the Harry Potter series, Crabbe is a pure-blood wizard who serves as one of Draco Malfoy’s principal followers. Several members of his family, including his father and grandfather, are associated with dark magic. During his final year at Hogwarts, Crabbe also becomes involved in the dark arts.

Although Crabbe appears in all seven of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, Waylett portrayed him in the first six film adaptations: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009).

By the mid-2000s, Waylett had expressed an interest in developing a long-term acting career, with the support of his parents. During this period, his mother also served as his manager.

Run-ins with the Law

In 2006, Waylett faced allegations involving cocaine use. His legal difficulties continued on April 7, 2009, when he and a friend were arrested after police discovered eight bags of cannabis and a knife inside their vehicle. Officers subsequently searched his mother’s home, where they reportedly found a small cannabis-growing operation.

The following month, Waylett faced charges related to cannabis possession. On July 16, 2009, he appeared in court and pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis while maintaining that the plants were intended for his personal use. Five days later, a judge ordered him to complete 120 hours of community service.

Following his arrest, Waylett was dropped from the Harry Potter cast and did not appear in the final two films of the franchise.

His legal troubles escalated again in 2011. On October 14, he was arrested in connection with the England riots that year. The charges against him included violent disorder, possessing an article with the intention of damaging property, and receiving stolen goods. During the disturbances, he was reportedly seen carrying a Molotov cocktail and participating in the looting of a pharmacy in Chalk Farm, London. Authorities also discovered cannabis plants at his residence.

On March 20, 2012, Waylett was sentenced to two years in prison for his involvement in the riots.
