The Career of Jermaine

Jermaine Dupri began his musical career when he was just a child. At the age of twelve, he began his career as a dancer, performing for the hip-hop group Whodini. He went on to perform all around the country after that.

Dupri then produced his first act, a female hip hop trio called ‘Silk Tymes Leather,’ in 1990. He formed the ‘Kriss Kross’ with Chris Smith and Chris Kelly shortly after and released the album ‘Totally Krossed Out’ in 1992. He started his own label, ‘So So Def Recordings,’ the following year.

He quickly discovered the R&B group Xscape and signed them to his label. The band’s debut album, ‘Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha,’ was released and went platinum.

Following that, Dupri’s label teamed up with Columbia Records and began collaborating on distribution. Usher’s album ‘My Way’ had several songs created by the American rapper and record producer in 1997. ‘You Make Me Wanna,’ ‘Nice & Slow,’ and ‘My Way,’ all from the album, became blockbuster hits and placed at significant positions on numerous charts.

Dupri then released the lead track from his debut album, ‘Life In 1472,’ titled ‘The Party Continues.’ The rapper’s contract with Columbia was canceled shortly after this album, prompting Dupri to go to Arista Records.

After then, he collaborated with well-known performers such as Mariah Carey and DJ Chuckie. Then, in 2004, Dupri teamed up with Usher again for the album ‘Confessions,’ co-writing and co-producing the album’s songs, including ‘Burn,’ ‘My Boo,’ and ‘Confessions Part II.’

He collaborated with Mariah Carey once more for her song ‘We Belong Together’ a year later. In the same year, he collaborated with Bow Wow on the film ‘Wanted.’ He co-wrote and co-produced the films ‘Success’ and ‘Fallin’ in 2007.

Dupri co-created the reality TV series ‘The Rap Game’ with Queen Latifah in 2015. All of the rapper’s talents have gained him worldwide acclaim. In 2006, he received a Grammy Award for his R&B song “We Belong Together.”
