Music Career of Watkin Tudor Jones
Watkin Tudor Jones began his musical journey as the lead vocalist of Max Normal, a live hip-hop band. In 2001, the group released its debut album, Songs from the Mall, and subsequently performed at several major music festivals across South Africa, including Splashy Fen, Oppikoppi, and Up the Creek.
In early 2002, Max Normal disbanded, prompting Jones to move to Cape Town. There, he collaborated with Felix Laband and DJ Dope of Krushed & Sorted on a multimedia project called The Ziggurat, associated with the group The Constructus Corporation. However, this project also came to an end in 2003.
In 2005, Jones reintroduced Max Normal in a new form, creating a corporate-themed hip-hop group called MaxNormal.TV. The lineup included Jones, Yolandi Visser, Justin De Nobrega, and Neon Don. The group later released its album Good Morning South Africa in 2008, combining hip-hop with theatrical performances and distinctive visual elements.
In 2008, Jones joined forces with DJ Hi-Tek and Yolandi Visser to establish Die Antwoord, a rap-rave group known for blending different cultural influences and musical styles. Their music embraced the South African countercultural aesthetic known as “Zef.” The group released its debut album, $O$, through its official website and subsequently published the music video for “Enter the Ninja.” The video rapidly gained popularity online, attracting millions of views and generating so much traffic that the band’s website reportedly crashed. Following this breakthrough, Die Antwoord secured a recording contract with Interscope Records.
In 2010, the group made its live debut at the Coachella Music Festival. During the same year, it released the EP 5, along with tracks such as “Super Evil” and “Very Fancy.” In 2011, Die Antwoord departed from Interscope Records and established its own independent label, Zef Recordz. The group subsequently released its second studio album, Ten$Ion, featuring popular tracks including “Fatty Boom Boom” and “Baby’s on Fire.” Jones and his bandmates also released the standalone single “XP€N$IV $H1T” and embarked on a short European tour.
On June 3, 2014, Die Antwoord released its third studio album, Donker Mag. The album was accompanied by music videos for songs such as “Cookie Thumper” and “Pitbull Terrier,” which were published on YouTube and attracted considerable attention.
In February 2015, the group collaborated with DJ Muggs on the mixtape Suck on This, which was made available through SoundCloud. The following year, on September 16, 2016, Die Antwoord released its album Mount Ninji and da Nice Time Kid. Music videos for “Banana Brain” and “Fat Faded Fuck Face” were released alongside the album’s promotional campaign.
In 2017, the group announced another project titled The Book of Zef. Although it was initially described as the band’s final album, the project did not follow the originally anticipated release path, and Die Antwoord continued its musical activities beyond that period.
