Matt Terry’s Career

He began his career as a singer as a member of the trio Far Too Far. One of the trio’s members was the sibling of ‘JLS’ member Marvin Humes. In the fifth season of ‘The X Factor,’ ‘JLS’ competed. Matt and the other members of his trio immigrated to the United States in the hopes of signing a record contract. However, the group was unable to secure a record contract and eventually disbanded.

He auditioned for the thirteenth season of the British reality show ‘The X Factor’ in 2016. During the audition, he sang “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King, an American soul, and R&B vocalist. His rendition of this song received the utmost number of affirmative votes from the judges, which was four. He advanced to the “Bootcamp” phase.

During “Bootcamp,” he was placed in the “Boys” category. Nicole Scherzinger, an American vocalist, and songwriter, served as his mentor. He then qualified for the ‘Six-Chair’ round by performing ‘See You Again’ by American vocalist Charlie Puth.

He advanced from the ‘Six-Chair’ round to the ‘Judges’ Houses’ round by performing ‘When I Was Your Man’ by Bruno Mars. By performing Michael Jackson’s “She’s Out of My Life,” he advanced to the “Live Show” round. Nicole Scherzinger, his mentor, selected him as one of the top three contestants in the ‘Boys’ category.

He won his first live performance by performing “You Don’t Own Me” by Lesley Gore. For his second live performance, he performed “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” (the Marvin Gaye version). In his third live performance, he sang “I’ll Be There.” His ensuing live performances on ‘The X Factor’ included songs by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, ‘Wham!,’ ‘The Emotions,’ and Sam Smith.

The eighth live broadcast featured two rounds. In the first, he sang “Secret Love Song” by “Little Mix,” and in the second, he sang “Alive” by Sia. In the eighth live performance, he finished in second place, securing his position in the next round, the semi-finals.

The semi-final round consisted of three rounds, during which he sang the traditional Christmas carol “Silent Night” and Jessie Ware’s “Say You Love Me.” In the third round of the semi-finals, a vote deemed him secure, and he advanced to the final round.

He mesmerized the audience with his renditions of ‘Take Me Home’ by Jess Glynne, ‘Purple Rain’ by Prince, and ‘Writing’s on the Wall’ by Sam Smith in the final round of the competition. After his flawless performance of Randy Crawford’s “One Day I’ll Fly Away” in the final round, he was declared the victor of the thirteenth season of “The X Factor.”

Soon thereafter, he issued his ‘Winner’s Single.’ This was the second time a “Winner’s Single” was released following the conclusion of the series. The title of the tune was “When Christmas Comes Around.” It was composed by Ed Sheeran and Amy Wadge and published on December 11, 2016. The composition reached the second and third positions, respectively, on the ‘Scottish Singles’ and ‘UK Singles charts.

It also peaked at 14 and 28, respectively, on the Irish and Finnish listings. Two British charities, ‘Together for Short Lives’ and ‘Shooting Star CHASE,’ received equal portions of the proceeds from the sale of the single. The British “Chancellor of the Exchequer” waived taxes on the single because the proceeds were intended for charitable organizations. Matt also signed contracts with the record labels RCA and Syco.

In 2017, he appeared as a guest artist on Enrique Iglesias’s remix of the popular single ‘Sbeme La Radio’ alongside Sean Paul. The song was among the top 10 successes in the United Kingdom. It was silver-certified by the British Phonographic Industry. (BPI).

In the same year, he appeared as a guest artist on a cover of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel, which was published on June 21, 2017, to raise money for the victims of the “Grenfell Tower” fire. The single topped the British and Scottish singles charts and peaked at positions 25 and 23, respectively, on the Irish and Finnish singles charts.

RCA Records released his debut album, titled ‘Trouble,’ on November 24, 2017. The album peaked at number 29 on the British chart and number 39 on the Scottish chart. The album’s most popular track was “Sucker for You.” Unfortunately, it was deemed the least successful debut album of any ‘X Factor winner ever. In an interview conducted on June 3, 2018, he revealed that he had severed ways with RCA records. A few media outlets reported that RCA Records terminated his contract due to the lackluster sales of his debut album.
