Howard Caspar Paul and his wife Margaret had five sons, and he was one of them. Ron’s father ran a dairy company, and he assisted him in running it. He served in the United States Air Force as a flight surgeon from 1963 to 1965, and the United States Air National Guard from 1965 to 1968. Following his military service, he established a private obstetrics and gynecology practice in Texas. He met academics Hans Sennholz and Murray Rothbard, who sparked an interest in economics in him, and he went on to produce books on economic theory. After President Richard Nixon abandoned American participation in the Bretton Woods System in 1971, he decided to run for office. He ran for the United States Congress as a Republican candidate.
He was elected to the United States House of Representatives, 22nd district, in 1976 after winning a special election. He was a member of Congress for three terms, from 1976 to 1977, 1979 to 1985, and 1997 to 2003. In the early 1980s, he began writing seriously.
